Pulled the trigger on the first shot of the afternoon and my ears started ringing and had smoke and powder blow back in my face.

Pulled the bolt to see what happened and the bottom rim fell completely off the casing and was left with a hollow casing stuck inside the chamber.

I don’t know how many 22 rounds I’ve been through in my life but never seen this before, left my ears ringing for 15min and had to dig the casing out of the chamber with my knife to keep on hunting. Managed to put 6 in the bag.

I wouldn’t say it’s filthy dirty, but it hasn’t had its end-of-season annual cleaning yet either.

Need to push a jag through that thing. RNL projectiles are nasty and build in the throat and barrel. I have seen lead worms pushed out of .22LR barrels, even worse with FRT or FA. People are in for a surprise with all the .22LR FRT triggers selling if they don’t clean the gun regularly and correctly. Lawsuits will happen and the firearm manufacturers and ammunition manufacturers will get cleared because FRT are generally aftermarket uncovered alterations.

I thought about it but don’t see how this time. Hunted Tuesday afternoon, killed the last one about 80yds from the truck. Gun got propped up on the dog box for the picture and was put in the truck where it stayed until I pulled it out yesterday afternoon to hunt. Gun went on my shoulder and he made the first tree where I fired this shot less than 2 min of being in the woods.

Monday the 9th, I did have a barrel obstruction. I slipped going up a creek bank the evening before right at dark. Monday I checked my gun before hunting with it and there was dirt in the end of the barrel. The winch on my truck had a built-in air compressor and I hooked the hose to it, dropped the bolt, and blew it out from the chamber to the end of the barrel and everything’s been seemingly fine since

Was this from your bolt gun or a semi-auto? If it was a semi, I'd suspect that it fired before it got fully into battery. round not fully chambered. That still suggests the gun needs a good cleaning.

Maybe just a defective case. Thin or cracked at the base. I imagine the QC on a bulk .22 LR round isn’t overly rigorous. You can deform a .22 case with your thumbnail. Still never seen that happen before, so kind of weird.

I had this happen a couple months ago, first time in my life also. Ruger Mark 2, Rem Thunderbolts, from the same lot number/case I had been shooting from and the case is about done.
Burnt my hand and covered in black soot. Pistol was clean and no bore obstruction, had already shout 60-70 rounds that morning.

Had case problems with 30.06 and shotgun shell. Shotgun shell was the worst and paper from base wadwent all through the action and the gun had to come completely apart to clean it out. Had a remington 06125 shell twist in half in an old remington 742. Neelde nose pliars and a lot of cussing fixed that. Last of both of those two remingtons for me.

I read this thread when it first posted. Ironically, I had a similar event this afternoon shooting my newly built BRN 10/22. Federal 40 grain.

Welcome to modern ammo. More frequent than you think with manufacturers defects. We shoot thousands of rounds and open cases with reversed primers, had crates with numerous no powder but primered cartridges, and numerous failures to fire on otherwise good outwardly appearing rounds. Glad you are ok but mass production ammo from name brands are shit these days.
