Take the foot off and inspect the gears in the lower unit. Look for any signs of damage, and start from there. Also, check the top of the drive shaft and make sure that it is in good shape as well...and one more thought, check that your shift shaft does not have any play in it...(i.e. motor vibrations causing it to go in and out of gear). These things are relatively simple to do if you have some common sense....there is a lot of info on the web about it as well. Good luck

when is the last time you changed your foot oil? pull the lower plug and look for any sign of metal. it is magnetised. you can get that foot rebuilt for around $300.

I'm not going to say that it's easy, but if you have some mechanical sense about you, then you can do it. If you don't want to put a lot more money into it, buy yourself a service manual and go from there. It will tell you exactly how to do the above mentioned things...and you might surprise yourself and save some hard earned $$$.
