Charleston, SC, United States (AHN) - An elderly woman almost became gator bait while walking along a trail at South Carolina's Cypress Gardens.

The woman, who was walking with her husband along a narrow path around 1 p.m. Monday, was bitten on the leg by the six-foot creature, reports said. She was bitten a second time on her hand when she fell.
The woman managed to walk away from the incident and was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina hospital, according to reports.
The woman did not know if she inadvertently stepped on the animal or if the attack was unprovoked. Neither wildlife officers nor alligator trappers had found the reptile as of late Monday.

Alligators do not actively feed until the water temperature reaches 72 degrees because they can not digest food when it's cold. She had to have stepped on him or come very close to him.

The real problem is that a wild alligator, even a big one, would have never let someone get that close. That particular gator must have gotten too comfortable around people.

Those gators there get right up next to the trails. You can walk right up to them practically. I'm not surprised by this really. Most folks think it's a freaking park. There's still (sort of) WILD animals there. Alligators will be Alligators just like Killer Whales will be Killer Whales. You mess around long enough or if you aren't aware you are liable to get in a bad situation real quick.

I was scouting a draw hunt with a friend back in the 1990's. A recent cool snap had brought some rain so the water was high on both sides of the dike. We hadn't walked 100 yards and had already seen two cottonmouths on the dike. They were moving very slow so my friend tapped one on the tail with the tip of his boot. That "lethargic" moccasin turned around and struck at my friend so quick that it almost got him. My buddy got the shakes afterward so we canceled our scouting trip.

I can almost see the same thing happening with this 6-foot gator.

my dad and another guy were hog hunting down around wee tee monday when the guy in front of him almost got struck-quick draw mgraw(pops) put a .308 in it before his buddy got a load of venom. cottonmouth was as big around as my bicep and 4ft ten inches(healthy). Pops said there was nothing lethargic about that one--keep your eyes open fellas.

trust me you can get REAL close to the gators there! I personally got uncomfortably close (less than 15 feet) to a few trying to get some photos last year. After I thought about what I was doing for a minute and how quickly things could go south I got the heck out of dodge.

What gets me is, why the hell should they be protected? Everyone wants to save the gators or the bald eagles or anything else that's not worth a shit, they eat and they're dangerous and what good comes from them other than killing a few snakes.......I say kill'em all!

Woman had two puncture wounds, one on hand and one on leg? Either that was an old large mostly toothless alligator, or she fell on a nail or twig and then panicked and said it was a gator. Most gators have more than one tooth, even those from Arkansas.

"Asked how big the alligator was, Monnet said estimates varied from 3 feet to 6 feet long. No one except the victim and her husband had seen the animal, he said. The husband kicked at the gator and it ran away."


Only two people saw it and their estimates range from three to six feet? DNR needs to catch all of the gators between three and six feet and have a line-up with the victim.

my boy came a mere step from landing ontop of a 7' during the youth day at the Cape. If Winyah-Jay wasnt the witness, i'd of thought he came 30 feet from a 4 footer...nope, 1 step from a 7'er. that would of probably screwed up his hunt that day.

PS: typical media bullshit...attacked vice bit. kinda like a pit bull and a Lab......
