    Default Insurance Question

I hit a deer on Tuesday. $2300 estimate, $1,000 deductible, good driving record, no claims in a long time. I’m with State Farm.

Planning on putting a bumper replacement brush guard on this vehicle, cost $1,600.

For people in the insurance business, am I better off cancelling the claim and paying for the brush guard out of pocket so my rates don’t go up? Or roll on with the claim and go less out of pocket?

Does the bumper replacement brush guard 100% fix the issue?

Hitting a deer is covered under the Comprehensive coverage, should not be an accident surcharge under this coverage. Call your agent and confirm. If I'm correct, I'd advise to proceed with the claim, no sense to leave $1300 on the table if it doesn't affect your rates.
You should be able to work out the upgrade to the bumper with the insurance adjuster with you paying the difference in the replacement bumper and the cost of the upgrade.

I wouldn't file it. Save it for the big claims (which hopefully never happen). I never tell my clients not to file a claim but I tell them what I would do if it were me.

comp claims are chargeable but don't bring in an at fault accident surcharge.

If your insurance co wrote the estimate they already know, regardless of what you do with the claim as far as collection.

I heard the same from my insurance agent about my home. I had a tree fall through my roof, he told me to pay out of pocket and “save” my claim for when my kitchen catches on fire. Craziest shit Ive ever heard……..I hate insurance companies. It’s such a scam.

This is not helpful to your question Hagen, but being told to save it for something bigger drives me insane.

Not worth making the claim in my opinion. If no recent claims then it probably won’t hurt you but could become an issue with another claim coming in the future.

I, personally wouldn’t file it, but I’m not a general insurance agent. I do the more specialized stuff that they aren’t smart enough for. Laughy Face

Agents have loss ratios. Does that affect their answers? I don’t know. Your loss experience affects what you pay though. I had a pipe burst in my kitchen ceiling. About 10,000 claim. My insurance went up to 8000 per year at renewal. With the increase I was paying for the cost of the claim over the next 2-3 years anyway.

Comp claims absolutely will affect your rates for three years, IME. I no longer make windshield claims. I've got a great local mobile guy that has built enough buying power to be very reasonable.

If you were planning on buying the bumper already then I see no reason to file the claim. Then you're out a $1,000 deductible plus the cost of the bumper if you're going to replace it soon anyways.

If your homeowner’s insurance is 8000 a year, your house better be 20,000 sqft or live at the coast or in a flood zone

I just had a claim with State Farm at the end of 24.

They would only pay for used parts for my repairs.

    Damn State Farm.

I get the frustration from people on this subject. I will say I’ve had zero complaints from anybody who has had a repair done with a recycled part since I’ve been an agency the past five years. They come with a full warranty and without defect. But again, I understand the feeling.

Pre-accident condition and "used parts" don't jibe. I go as far as matching factory e-coat colors on parts that customers will NEVER see because that is how you restore a vehicle to pre accident condition. "Without defect," is that a joke?

Half my work day is spent telling insurance jokers that they don't dictate how repairs are made. It's a giant waste of my time, but they sit at a desk and tell me I can buy this or that Chinese bullshit part from some obscure web based BULLSHIT distributor.

Who is "warranting" these parts? And against what?

They work for you. And so does the shop responsible for the repair.

DO NOT let them dictate the process. It is YOUR property, they only insure it.
