    Default helene and climate change

The devastation in western North Carolina is a result of a combination of factors related to climate change and the terrain.

    Climate has ALWAYS changed.

If you mean manmade climate change, go hang with the homies at democratic underground.

my neighborhood flooded catastrophically less than 10 years ago. my brother's area was devastated this past weekend. In my limited knowledge, that's a lot of 1000yr floods in the last ten years. I would like to discuss the amount of rainfall these two areas have received in recorded history. Is it the "terrain" (which I think includes pavement) or are we in a warming trend that will have produce catastrophic rainfall in the coming years? It kind of important to society as a whole. You wanna rebuild the town of Canton, or should we hold off considering the potential for more flooding in the near future.

i think that life is long and sometimes weather does what it wants whether thats in 10, 20, 100 or a 1000 years

and all the concrete and development doesnt help when it rains more than we need

    the world is old
    we are not

Look back 100 years ago and Mars Bluff is correct about always changing climate, BUT, alot I think has to do with all the asphalt jungles that have been created in that time period. Forest absorb heat and black asphalt radiates it.

I think it has more to do with development than anything else. As stated above we continue to expand our neighborhoods and the rain has no where to go.

I forget which river it is up there in the mountains but I was reading that this event broke the record for for high water. The last time the record was set with catastrophic rain and flooding was in the late 1700s. Was there climate change then?

People build houses on the beach then blame global warming for their being idiots.
People build houses in narrow valleys and blame global warming when they get washed away.
People build cities on top of marshes (Charleston and others like it) and blame global warming for streets flooding when their city is sinking.
People build vast neighborhoods, driveway, roads and parking lots preventing natural drainage and blame the flooding that ensues on global warming.
I guess it was man made global warming that enables me to find seashells in Chesterfield County, 100 miles from the coast

    People are stupid.

The devastation was caused by a hurricane. Hurricanes have been hammering our east coast for thousands of years even before the industrial revolution. If man were suddenly removed from the earth hurricanes would still ravage the east coast of north and central america for thousands more years. We don't control the weather. I wish i could, i know what i would do.

One theory is that hippies in Asheville smoking too much weed and vaping are warming the Blue Ridge and further exacerbated by belching and farting due to craft brews.

Geologists are now open to the theory that terrain, like the Grand Canyon, Horse Bend, etc., was caused by a catastrophic rain/dewatering event over days or weeks rather than millions of years of normal flow. Interesting. Christianity and nearly all major recognized religions and writings have stories of the "Great Flood."

Water is powerful and gravity is undefeated. Meanwhile, Pack's is flooding as we speak AFTER Santee Cooper brought down the upper lake six feet in three days. We all live downstream. MG

From what I can remember in my lifetime...

The strongest hurricane ever happened before I was born, and if the coastal and inland population then was what it is now, Camille would far surpass anything we've seen since.
In the 80's, Camden received enough rain that dams failed and destroyed a pile of businesses, killed people, and destroyed one of my favorite burger places.

In 1990, I failed farm shop, because a "100 year flood" hit the blue ridge mtns and the Chatooga River surged to nearly 11 ft, and I was not going to miss it for some silly exam in some silly class. I paddled a section of the river in 30 minutes that takes over 3 hours at normal levels and was dodging huge trees the entire way down.

20 years ago, I lived through two hurricanes that tracked over Asheville, NC. Flooding was so bad that the gatehouse and two story gift shop at the Biltmore entrance was completely under water...completely! We were without water for nearly a month, people died, and it destroyed many lives.

Each of these events that I was smack dab in the middle of...they were deemed "100 year floods."

We are not observing multiple "100 year floods," so don't blame the fact that some humans with limited computing data mis-named the phenomena way back when.

So, as far as I can tell, before and throughout my 56 years on this planet, somewhere in the US has received catastrophic flooding nearly annually if not annually, and other areas have been in drought at the same time nearly if not annually. Sometimes the flooding is far worse due to the topography causing the flooding. Sometimes the overall impact seems less due to the rural nature of the area that is flooding.

Adjusted for population and inflation...especially along coastal areas and flood prone locations, extreme weather events and their costs are occurring less and costing less than they were many decades ago.

Climate changes constantly. When looking at huge blocks of time, we are in a warming cycle not at all unlike many warming cycles that have come before...and when I say before, I mean many times before a few grunting humans were contributing little more than a cooking fire or farts to the global human carbon footprint. Why are we so quick to want to try to attribute this cycle to humans when it is tracking nearly identically to the pre-human cycles? That's easy...it makes some very rich and powerful people much richer and much more powerful. That one sentence is absolutely fact, so until someone that has nothing to gain monetarily can show some realistic correlation between humans and "climate change," I'll go with Akams Razor (sp?) and confidently say that it's a BS scam.

This would be pushed to the point of belief if it benefited the left one iota. Hell, I bet if you keep posting this on social media enough it would gain enough traction to stick around in small circles for years.

My store in East Camden went under 6 feet when that dam broke.. I got a call from a buddy, Sunday, that owns the car lot next door.. He was moving cars out of the back lot because Pine Tree was backing through our lots.. That flood was the first thing that popped into my head.

it was as JAB said, a perfect alignment of storms that caused this. Elevation changes caused more rain to fall in the mountains resulting in catastrophic flooding and damage. Climates do change..I'm certain of that.

More people, more tragedy. Climate has nothing to do with it. They said the same crap when that hurricane hit Charleston a while back, noting how much more damage there was. Conveniently ignoring that the amount of people and structures (and the value of those structures) had increased exponentially since the last major hurricane.

Hell I read one article blaming general Charleston flooding on “climate change”. The author apparently didn’t know that most of Charleston was water not that long ago and that it was backfilled with dirt, trash etc. to create more usable land. I’m no scientist but I’m pretty sure low coastal urban land is susceptible to flooding. Especially if the land used to be a body of water.

If man made climate change is real, any serious attempt to stop it would have to involve killing 80% of the world’s population (which some might argue the powers that be are plotting as we speak). The alternative to this would be to let it happen and the problem will sort itself out. In the mean time, be a good steward.
