Default Land Cruiser 80 vs 100

Ive gone down the internet rabbit hole and talked to friends in the know so I figured why not see what the "brain trust" in here has to say about the comparison....looking for a hunting/goof off vehicle. Had several Toyotas over the years and always wanted a LC. The look of the 80s and off road capabilities have are really doing it for me but the V8 and nicities of the 100 are too. Itll probably come down to whatever I find a deal on that I cant resist but I'm leaning hard to the 80. Am I going to regret the 6 and the ride if I go that way?

Love 80’s but they are pretty sluggish. If you’re just driving around town it’s no big deal but it’s definitely more of a “truck”. The 100 series have a few more bells and whistles but more stuff to break. Can’t really go wrong with either. Land Cruisers are pretty much bombproof-

I went through the same thing.. I'm not a car nerd, but I've had some cool ones. I'm at the age where I want comfort, and I bought a 100.. it's actually a lexus. I like it, zero pics until maybe next week when more tweaking gets done. I'm kinda mature, so I'm not going overland style.. An old guy owned it, single owner down in Hilton Head. My wife actually prefers it to her new lexus for a riding.

Part cost is a good bit higher with the 80s.

Ive known a few 80s that burn through engine oil quickly, but it couldve just been two with the same issue. Big difference is the v6 vs v8, as well as the steering design. 100 series is much more comfortable to drive. My 23yo sister drives my dads old 25yo 100 series

Never driven a 100 series but I love my 80. It’s a tank. Definitely burns some gas though.

80 series is one of the only Land Cruisers I haven't owned yet (50 series is the other one).

I daily drive a 100 series, it has 309k miles on it and I've put most of them on there. I've driven it to New Foundland for a moose hunt (brought an entire moose back), used it for a grouse hunt in Maine hunting deep into logging roads, it's been to Arkansas 20+ times, bear hunts in Virginia, local bird hunts and several trips I'm not remembering. I put up a cage that separates the back seat from the cargo area (my jump seats are in my shop), it's easy to throw a dog or two in the back. ARB bumper with a winch, regular a/t tires, no lift or anything past that, it goes anywhere I need it to go. Maintenance has been minimum, the only issue I've ever had is a couple of plastic connections to the radiator hoses get brittle and break. Other than that oil changes and tires. I am going to replace the compressor (don't really need a/c up here) and put some new door speakers in it one day. It's the best vehicle I've ever owned and if it died today I can say I've gotten my money's worth out of it, it's never left me on the side of the road.

If I had to buy another vehicle tomorrow, I'd look for a low mileage (200k or less) 100 series, or move up to a 2015ish 200 series.

they are both good trucks. you can spend a LOT of money trying to make them "NEW" again... My last 100 series had 360k miles on it when I sold it. I put a TON of money in it the last few years. Got a 570 for a hunting /daily driver with only 38k miles on it... definitely a step up in horsepower vs the 4.7 engine.
They are all good trucks - buy what you like.

    Clear your PM’s.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I've had two 80 series and miss them. They are very very sluggish so if you are in a hilly area or plan on towing you may want to consider the 100. (Or put a V8 in it)

The 80s are also the hot ticket item on the market and are surging while the 100's value have dropped.

Cool. I like mine.. it's funny, I have a history of buying things without telling my wife, or just forgetting.. only thing I probably regret was our first house in down town. It was kinda on a whim, and I've heard about that for like 20 years. I looked hard at one 80 series diesel, came close, before I saw this one. I thought she might use it so I didn't want the questions or complications. She came home, saw the lx and didn't really bug me. She drove it the next day and said it rode better then hers, zero complaints.

I have owned both and would recommend the 100 series if you plan to drive on the highway to get to wherever you are going..the 80 would be my choice if it were going to be short distances and moderate off-roading because of the solid front axle. I drive a 100 and sold my 80 to my brother who has mechanical ability. The 80 currently has 375K miles on it and has some trouble with the MAF
    At least I'm housebroken.
