    Default Brevard/Hendersonville/Chimney Rock Area Ideas

I've looked around on Trip Adviser, and I reckon I have a decent day planned, but just wanted to see if there's anything that you guys really recommend doing that I may have overlooked.

The idea is to leave early Wed. and head up I26 to a spot to go tubing; it's about 20 mi. SE of Hendersonville. After a 2-hr tube trip, head W of where we were to do some gem mining. Then, head to Hendersonville and fiddle around, though I'm not 100% sure that there's much to do/see there that Colt may appreciate. Any ideas on great restaurants? I've got some ideas based on TA ideas, but any personal input would be good, too.

Thursday morning, we'll get an early start to head to Carowinds. We'll be there all day, and we're staying right by the park that night.

Friday will be Cabellas, Bass Pro, Concord Mills, Dave & Busters, and then a hotel across the street. Dinner will probably be that Cajun place that's pretty good.

Saturday, we're going to the monster truck show up at the CMS. However, it doesn't start til 6pm, so we're open to any ideas up until then. I'd like to hit up some breweries if there are any nearby, but...well, Colt probably wouldn't agree with that. I might be able to slide in one for "lunch". EDIT -- to kill time (unless there are some good ideas), we'll probably work Pete's Dragon into Friday or Saturday.

So, essentially -- anything neat to look at/do on Wednesday up in the aforementioned area, and are there any great ideas for what to do before monster trucks on Saturday up around where I'll be?

    Thanks!

I am exhausted just reading your itinerary. Finding some time to just sit and relax may be a good idea, but that might not be y'alls style.

ETA: When going somewhere new, I like to check out any historical markers or sites and see what's up. This has proven to be a great time killer, and you always learn something new about an area.

Unfortunately, I don't ever seem to get a "vacation" while on vacation. I guess the rafting trip will be the most relaxing part. To make it worse, I HATE driving.

Anyone know of any neat falls/swimming holes up that way?

Ami and I hiked Chimney Rock last year, so I don't care if I never do that again. Colt might find it neat, but damn the journey!

I went to Sliding Rock several times with Scouts as a kid; I haven't been back in ages. I don't know how a nearly 40 year-old body can handle it.

    I'll look into LGF.

Umm...no. I'm seeking for ideas on stuff to do in a spot(s) I'm unfamiliar with.

Dupont Forest is a short drive and sits SE of Brevard and SW of Hendersonville. There are some nice walking trails and a few waterfalls. Its a nice place if it's not too crowded.

Sierra Nevada for dinner in your way to Hendersonville would be my absolute must. It's more or less on your way from Brevard to Hville. They have a self guided walking tour that shows the bottling facility. Kids all ages are impressed. They have pretty large grounds with corn hole, bocce ball, live music etc. It is really impressive and the food is outstanding. This would be your best bet to hit a family friendly brewery, and get an above average meal. I recccomend the rabbit and the duck fries.

I'm assuming that you may be tubing the green river. I don't know the age of Colt, but there is a nearby water fall called Bradley Falls. It's off of the Saluda exit. It's a pretty neat hike in. It's about a mile, pretty good path, not "much" crazy terrain. It's actually a rather easy hike except for one vertical wall that you have to rappel down. They have a knotted rope anchored into the rock for you to use. There may be a way around it, i'm not sure. It's a cool place to see if you are up for a somewhat adventurous hike in and out.

If my wife and her friends can handle Sliding Rock with a gang of kids, certainly you can. Hell, I am 45 and it is a blast. One thing to know is the Forest Service charges a couple of $ now at Sliding Rock.

Dupont is always crowded. I have heard good things about The Purple Onion in Saluda, but I have not actually eaten there.

    EDIT: Colt is 7.5.

Thanks for the additional idea. I'll see if we can work it in the hectic schedule, as I believe Looking Glass Falls will be done now, too.

Outstanding! I was just about to look it up. Thanks again. Too many good sounding beers...too little time.

And thanks Two Barrels! We may head out that way.

I was at sliding rock last Sunday for the first time in 20 years. My kids had a blast but I have to say it was a circus with the number of people there. Best advice I can give you is hit it on a weekday or you will be in a line like Carowinds. Still a lot of fun but way busier than I ever remember.

    Food
BBQ in Flat Rock- 10 minutes south of Hendo - Hubba Hubba smokehouse. Cooks exclusively with wood-
West First Pizza or Mezzaluna in Hendersonville for Pizza
    Umi/Sora- Best sushi in area
x2 on Sierra Nevada- plenty for kids to see and the beer is pretty good too.
x2 on Purple Onion. This might actually be the closest spot to your tubing (if the guy driving the school bus is Cecil- Colt may get to meet a real hillbilly (no teeth etc)

    Stuff to do
Carl Sandburg House- good hike up Glassy Mtn and Little Glassy- some goats and stuff too
Dupont is crowded no matter when you go- but worth doing if it works out
    Cravin' me some boiled p-nuts

This would be cool for a young kid. This group is doing research on hellbenders and runs a tight operation. This is located in rosman I believe.

Interesting idea. Damn the expense. Hell, I've got all SCUBA gear, minus tanks. I may just set up Colt with a mask and snorkel and let him have at it.

Just an update on Bradley Falls. We went and tubed the Green River yesterday. Afterwards we went to Little Bradley falls. About a 30-40min hike in. Pretty easy, cross a couple creeks, but an easy hike. I will attach a pic of falls. You can actually climb the falls to the side and there is a nice pool on that middle section where you can walk out under the fall. Pretty neat place. The other one I mentioned is on opposite side of road. It's a little tougher hike. Just in case you decided to check it out.

Also, saw some young kids there. I wouldn't hesitate to take my almost 5 yr old next time.
