Default Running Shrimp Poles with a Tiller Handle

I have a 17' CC jon boat. Looking at doing some modifications to it this spring and thought about a tiller handle. Removing the console will give me a ton more space. How is running shrimp poles with a tiller handle? I think all of my other boating activities should be fine with a tiller, just not sure about shrimping.

Depending on where your shifter is, it can be a bit of work for the driver. I'm sure it's doable.

If you're running poles by yourself, I'd say no way.

Sounds like a pain. What about a trolling motor?

I would get the newer style Yamaha tiller. Have a driver.

That's even worse, if you're throwing off the bow. Like Noguns said, have a driver.

I thought the point of going shrimping was to chug beer with your buddies? Surely a driver will be present

The problem I foresee for you with the tiller is that the tiller will not hold in position unless you locked it in place thus tending to want to turn the boat if you let go of the handle. I have a JB w tiller and have no problem using it for a variety of activities, but for your use stated it may not be ideal. One thing I hate about throwing a net out of a light aluminum boat is that you have to counter the pulling of the net w the motor so the net is not dragging the boat around when being pulled in/ not allowing the net to properly function.

I have used a tiller handle for shrimping for 15+ years. You need a driver that knows how to operate a boat in moving water and wind and you will be fine.
Honey...I'll do it after the season is over.

I’ve done it many times. I would rather use a teller than a steering wheel for shrimping

You've never gotten a cast net tangled in a trolling motor while drunkenly attempting to catch bait off the bow of the boat on the way back to the hill.

    Fuck. That.

25 merc with the shifter in the throttle and you are gtg!

(may suck on a 17ft boat though)

We generally try to get it the day before. Or on the way out. Is this some type of consolation for an empty box?

I’ve run a tiller by myself in both a High Tide as well as a 14 ft Carolina Skiff. I’ve also done it with a trolling motor. It’s not bad if the current/wind is pushing away from the poles. Nudge up to them and throw no problem. It becomes a cluster when it is pushing you into them.

Running poles with a tiller is the only way.

    Naw, dawg.

If'n you're gonna fish in the mernin', I find it best to go ahead and get bait the evening before (if you have some way to keep it alive).

There's nothing worse than being stuck looking for bait for a couple hours when you should be fishing.

Plus, I tell myself I get to "sleep in" the next morning.

"Sleeping in" helps with the hangover should you party a bit too hard the night before (or fall overboard while catching bait).
