Interesting pick. He was a bad mofo, for sure. Career cut way too short in the pros. Back when playing Pitt meant you were going to have a bruised body the next day.

Yep. And that matters in this discussion.

Florida/Tennessee used to be a game that decided a lot of shit. I miss smaller conferences, no playoff, and every week having a game that made or break a team's season.

That timeframe's my wheelhouse, w33kender. I'll go step-for-step with anyone on CFB trivia during that timeframe. And you're absolutely right about the UT/UF game. Always decided the East, when the SEC East was what the West is now. Only bigger game back then was Florida State/Miami. Those games where amazing, and I'm a proud SEC homer.

    This would be my pick

Needless to say disappointed D Watson did not win it but he won the Natty. Kind of like Chipper Jones being beat out for Rookie of year but won the World Series. End of day that is what they play for

Also have to some what agree on Watson but Lamar Jackson had a hell of a season the year he won, team was not up to level of Clemson but damn if he had some receivers that could have caught the ball they might have won it all

UM also split the "natty" with Nebraska that year, so there's that, too.
which begs the age old question, just what is the criteria for the award?

Jim McMahan , set every record known to man at the time but I assume due to where he played did not help

Ben Rothlisberger as well , same as above

Thought about him. T. Buckley might could be on the list, too. Maybe.

Not in contention for CFP GOAT, but Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, Al Wilson, and Derrick Johnson were unbelievable LB's as well. Gotta be amongst the AT defensive greats. Katzenmoyer, Dat Nguyen, Lavarr Arrington, Luke, and Ray-Ray, too.

absolutely true, but i do think they should wait until after the national championship game and have it factor in along with the bowl games
