    Default Buckwheat

I checked some buckwheat that I planted earlier this Spring and the deer are hammerin' it. Some of it was above knee high and they are eating everything, but the flower on the top. I tilled it under and threw out some more seeds to fill in the bare spots. This is the first time I've ever tried it and I am pleased so far.

That and it's ability to grow in poor sandy soil are the reasons that I planted it. Even though there wasn't much leaves left there was plenty of stalk material to till under. Since I had some left over I went ahead and planted some more. It should come up better than the first crop because I planted the first crop early. The cold nights seem to have stunted it. We definitely have plenty of water right now.

I planted buckwheat for doves one year. Deer didn’t bother it and the doves LOVED it. Puts out a ton of seeds too. Then the price went they the roof the next year and I haven’t planted any since.

I usually plant about 2 acres of it. If you plant it early enough you can get 2 regrowths from it the first season. And yes it comes back the following year just not near as thick. The deer absolutely hammer it at my place and the turkeys and doves do too when it goes to seed.

Thats what I want to know. I used to get it for $35 but about five years ago the price went through the roof when the yuppies started using buckwheat for pancake mix etc. Now all the prices I see are around $50.
