Default 18 month old male lab need help

My lab is 18 months old, male.

He can not be contained in the yard with the shock collar.

It shocks for 30 seconds and then stops. He goes to the perimeter and takes the shock and goes on about his business.

I don't like him on a chain or runner.

    Will getting him neutered help?

    Experiences?

Choke him out once or twice? Damn. Get with a trainer. Someone on here will chime in with some good advice. It will be less painful for him and you.

Don't know of it matters from a training stand.point, but as long as I'm home he's cool.

When I'm at work he goes roaming

I'll go along with the slinkies, know a few I would like to see pushed down some stairs. Just not sure about the whole choking thing. Could be anxiety that makes him bust out or just boredom, either way, get a kennel. 1) don't have to worry about him messing all over the yard, 2) don't have to worry about him getting hit by a car. Those should be the only two reasons you need. Out of curiosity, did you ever sneak out of the house or do something you weren't supposed to do when you were growing up? Did anyone cut your balls off because of it?

If he doesn't leave when your home, the dog just wants to be with you. Fence in your yard. Problem solved.

The runner will work as good as the kennel, I was wanting him to have more room.

Birdboy they didnt cut my balls, but it would have solved my problem of sneaking out too....I was sneaky for the same reason.

My question may have came out hard to understand........my thinking is for him to take the abuse of 30 seconds worth of a shock collar it must have been a strong desire to leave ie; female in heat.

He was over a mile away today, luckily I have one of my hunting collars with my name on it so they were able to call.

Just was thinking that a neuter MIGHT would help, I dont plan on breeding him and Bob Barker has been asking me to do it since 1986.

If you never want to breed him, then go ahead and get him cut. Then you won't have to worry about knocking up your buddies dog. Not sure it will fix the run away issue though.

Check the fence and make sure it is working properly. There is nothing wrong with a nice size "shaded" kennel for pup to stay in during the day. Much better than him running off and getting hit by a car etc.

We had our boy cut and it didn't solve anything and I regret it now. He will be a pup for a long time and curiosity will take him far. Kennel or fenced in back yard are the only way you will solve this problem.

If you get the tarp shade, make sure you anchor your pen to the ground in some fashion.

    Runners suck

Get a kennel and be done with it. Once you get home you can let him out to stretch his legs more.

    Welcome to my hell.

I've got a lab the same age and he just doesn't quit. Exact same problem as well. If I'm at home he's fine, if not he will either bark his head off or find some way to escape. Best cure I have found is about a hour worth of throwing the bumper when I get home from work. Just got to wear him down and get him into a routine.

Quack....I had the EXACT problem with my Brittany. Got the collar and it worked great for 3 weeks. After that, he'd man up, take the hit and spend the rest of the day running the neighborhood. Vet told me if I cut him he'd never cross it again. He was right. That 'ole boy wouldn't THINK about getting near that line after that. Sometimes I knew the battery was dead and he still wouldn't consider crossing that line.
