bye bye monkey
After a VERY tough first week, finally things turned around....friday 4/8 chased birds all over the place and finally hear a player back where i started.Get back to a 2 acre field near starting point and hear one hammering right across the field.....go to set up and run off a hen,but get set up and call and he hammers right back..wait a minute and call again and he hammers less than 100 yards....but then leaves following the hen. After a good while, hear another bird to my left and he is coming. He skirts around me to an old road bed(takes 45 minutes or so)and goes back and forth...he would go up the road and i called and he would come back. Finally he came up a road bed hammering away and spitting....bout blew my hat off 5 feet over my left shoulder....killed him 3 feet from the end of my barrell ! 19 lbs. , 10" beard , 1 3/16" spurs
Next day had one at 50-60 yards for an hour...right over a terrace row that hammered at eveything i threw at his sorry ass...had a hen with him and she was pissed, but not pissed enough...poked her head up,but never brought her boy in...could hear him spitting for 45 minutes right over the row along a road bed.....
Then this morning went to a huge clearcut where birds have been strutting on all the ridge tops....heard a few birds on the limb, but after flydown, only an occasional gobble. My buddy Glynn killed 2 before 8 and i missed one at 25 yards that caught me by suprise..... an hour or so later, after a lot of hard cutting and a couple gobble calls,i look over my shoulder and hear come 2 longbeards to my decoys......killed a double beard-16 1/2 lbs. , 7/8 " spurs , 9 1/4 " and 4 " beards..............damn i love turkey hunting !!!!!!
If it aint got 8 toes & a green head,it aint a duck.
