    DAYUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why dont they proof the barrel to withstand that much powder??... I am ignorant to the amounts in a cartridge and in a black powder gun but you would think they would build the fucker to take the abuse

i saw that on another board... apparently they CALL for smokeless powder. i do not know why they would make a muzzle loader that used smokeless. too much room for error... obviously!

I got the section of the manual in an email. You're right, they are asking to get sued with this stuff.

why did it blow up? is smokeless powder more powerful?... obviously has to be

but what gives here? the gun or the load? looks like the load from the looks of the gun but if it was proofed for smokeless?

It looks to me like it was double loaded. It probably was already loaded and the guy didn't remember. He rammed another load in on top of the "old" one and didn't seat it good leaving a gap between the two loads, effectively spiking the barrel.

My ex-wife lost a cousin that way. He was 18 years old and was going to ask his girlfriend to marry him that night, had the diamond in his pocket.

He was shooting one of the older style muzzle loaders with the hammer on the outside. According to his dad he was mixing black powder and smokeless powder and had worked the load up to about half & half.

His dad was standing behind him when he shot it the last time. He said the boy staggered back a step, made a noise like "huuhmmm", just a heavy exhale, then his knees buckled and his dad caught him.

Turns out the hammer had broken in half, the broken section about 1¾" long had blown off the gun, entered his forehead over his right eye brow and lodged against the back of his skull. A little more and it would have probably come on through and got his dad too.

Obviously after shooting it a few times with the mixed powder the hammer had formed a hairline crack from the excessive pressure and gas blowing back through the nipple hole where the cap goes.

    Killed him "DRT"!

Never cared for muzzleloaders. I know they are probably just as safe as any other gun if used correctly. I pick up a couple every now and then in trading. I traded one off for some repair work about a month back. Glad it looks like that guy will be able to keep his hand.

I got the same email yesterday. I don't use muzzeloaders so I don't know the correct way to load one, but if you read the print in Merg's last pic about the recommended smokless powder it says you have to use a smokeless powder scale and not a black powder volumetric measure. Could this have caused him to "double load" it?

the site i saw that on has a couple of black powder nuts on it. according to them if you poured the barrel full if black powder it would not have the abbility of doing that. one thing is black powder burns a lot slower than standard smokeless. the fast burning smokeless has zero room for error. give me the ol thompson disc loads any day. fawk pouring smokeless into a muzzle loader!

    off subject a little bit...

Smokeless powders are not all equal. They very greatly in density and burn rates. A particular weight load of one smokeless powder might be fine but the same weight of another will have a different volume and might blow your gun to smithereens.

I have a muzzle loader I have only shot infrequently. There is a mark on the ram rod that shows where it should be with a load packed to keep me from double loading or to indicate if I forgot to add the powder.

Thats a smart idea PB - never heard of before.

I am new to reloading and seeing stuff like this is probably good for me. Having a healthy fear of something keeps you safe.

Maybe it was a different guy, but I saw one of these a while back that supposedly had the bore site still in the barrel... I dunno.

Feather, that was a high powered rifle and I don't think anyone got hurt. That barrel split into four sections lengthwise but it didn't blow up the forearm.
