Not everybody has On Star, etc. or a phone book handy. Look what Google is doing................

This is for locating businesses only.

Here's a number worth putting in your cell phone, or your home phone speed dial:
1-800-goog411. This is a service from Google, and it's free -- It's great when you have no pen, pencil or paper handy. Don't waste your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number.

You need to call the golf course and don't know the number. Call the above number.
The voice at the other end says, "City & State." You say, " Garland , Texas ." He says, "Business, Name or Type of Service." You say, “Garland Golf Course." He says, "Connecting" and Garland Golf Course answers the phone.

This is nationwide and it is absolutely free!

Interesting....

I use a Crackberry, and also like "Poynt"... it isn't as easy and hands-free, but it finds all kinds of places, and PEOPLE, and lets you import their contact info straight to your contacts list.

I think you can request text info also and if your phone has gps function it will map it for you, but haven't tried it out for those functions.

You text GOOGL, then you can set your local area and then it will give you the local listings... you can also get answers to questions. We've used it for some time now.

Been using this for a while. The cool thing about it is that google is using this to collect voice information for a huge database to be used for voice recognition software. By using it for a free phonebook, they are assured a huge cross-section of dialects, etc.

yeah instead of using 411 i just text 466453 with the name of the business and city and it gives me the address, phone number and sometimes email.

Say i want the nearest zaxbys, i type zaxbys, charleston, sc to 466453 and it sends me back everything within seconds

Exactly. It's an interesting side note that one of the reasons Google is doing this, if not the only one, is to get millions of voice samples to use in their research and development of voice recognition software.
