Default Thought i hurt my boykin bad today!

So I was out in the yard this afternoon throwing some bumpers for brandy and had one of the biggest freak accidents ever! I had her at heel on my right side as usual and for some reason I decided to throw the bumper underhand with my right hand. Not sure if it's because i'm use to my old canvas and plastic bumpers and was throwing the avery hex flashers that i won this weekend at the hunt test or what. but as i was throwing it I hit her in the back of the neck and knocked her out cold! I was scared shitless! I picked her up right then and in the truck we went to the vet at 90 mph! She was only out for just a few seconds but didn't act right for about 30 min! From the time I hit her to the time we were at the vet was less than 10 min. My vet checked her out pupils and checked her reflexes, gave her some steroids as a precaution to keep the swelling down on her spine where she got hit and told me to be back when the opened up in the morning! Told me to keep her in the crate and not let her run when she goes out to the bathroom! It's been about 4 hrs and she's acting ok now just a little tired and groggy! I still feel like shit because I know that it's all my fault! I hope that I didn't screw her up too bad!

Anything like this ever happen to anyone else?

    Cant

I have hit my dogs with a bumper more than once, but cant say I ever knocked one out. As hard as it is to do, keep her in the kennel except to go out to relieve herself. If she will go on a leash do that too. I say that because if it is a spinal issue ( I dont think so) any extra movement is bad. I would guess that a few days rest will fix her right up.

Update us after the next vet visit.

What a wild experience, for you and the dog I am sure! I have never heard of knocking a dog out like that, although I am sure that if my labs could have they would have figured out how to.

As for the remote launchers, I am a dealer for Gunners Up and I will be glad to help you out.

I did something sort or similar to my boykin. We were playing in the yard just throwing the tennis ball not bumpers and I threw the ball and he tried to catch it in the air. The ball went off his nose and under the truck and he went full speed at it and hit his head on the drop down hitch. He acted really off balance for a few hours, the vet said he may had a concussion and to keep an eye on him. He turned out fine after a few hours but it was scary none the less.

I hate to here that. Had to scare the crap out of you. When I was in high school, I was hitting a tennis ball with a baseball bat and my lab at the time was going to get it. He loved it, but got to excited and tried to jump up to get it while I was in mid swing. Caught him up side the head with an aluminum bat! My heart dropped as I thought I killed him but he ran around in circles for a while and came back and put his head on my lap and was okay. I hope your dog turns out fine just the same but I know how it feels.

my lab fell off the front of my boat when he was about a year old, i was runnin bout 15 or so, i threw the boat in neutral instantly and under the boat he went and the motor came up as he hit just like when you hit a log...... he popped up and didnt know what had happened but didnt wanna do it again... i pulled him up into the boat and he wouldnt go close to the front again....

it was a scary few minutes... he only had a small scratch on his back... he was lucky...

The vet says she's ok and can come out of her kennel! giving her 25mg of remadyl twice a day as a precaution to keep swelling down.
