    Cassie “Tripp” Pinckney Mitchum, III

Tripp Mitchum, 53, of Branchville, passed away unexpectedly on June 22, 2026. Tripp was a beloved husband, father, son, and friend.

Born on March 10, 1973, Tripp grew up in Holly Hill, South Carolina, where he lived until he married the love of his life. He attended Holly Hill Academy from kindergarten through twelfth grade, fostering lifelong relationships with his classmates and community before pursuing higher education. Tripp went on to graduate from Francis Marion University.

Tripp’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Joy Mitchum; his two daughters, Ruby Mitchum and Josie Mitchum; his father, Pinckney Mitchum; his father-in-law James “Wig” Weathers; his mother-in-law Eunice Weathers; his sister-in-law, Lisa (Michael) Morrow; and his brother-in-law, Sam (Candice) Weathers. He is also survived by four nephews, Laurence (Madi) Livingston, Jared Weathers, Jordan (Cassidy) Weathers, and Max Morrow; two nieces, Melayna Weathers and Maura (Cade) Nettles; two great-nieces, Sterling and Murphy Livingston; and one great-nephew, Charlie Weathers; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Tripp was preceded in death by his mother, Bea Mitchum, and his sister, Kimberly Livingston.

Tripp was a member and trustee of Branchville Baptist Church. He embraced every hobby and endeavor with unmatched enthusiasm, always giving 110 percent of himself. A man of many talents, he seemed to excel at whatever he set his mind to, and if anyone questioned it, he was more than willing to explain at length why. Tripp was also known for his thorough and detailed stories, sharing them with unparalleled passion and precision. Rarely sitting still, he was always busy tinkering, building, fixing, or working on his next project. Among his many passions were cooking, hunting, and, in recent years, coaching softball. He found great joy in coaching Josie in the sport she loved and poured his heart into every team he led. True to his nature, he coached at every level, from recreational and travel teams to the high school level. Tripp also served as a board member of the Branchville Youth Sports program for many years and devoted countless volunteer hours to helping create the best possible experience for the children of Branchville. His dedication, generosity, and commitment to young athletes left a lasting impact on the community he loved.

Tripp was also well known for his love of cooking and the joy he found in sharing meals with others. Everyone who knew him seemed to have a favorite dish that only Tripp could make just right. Whether preparing a meal for family, friends, or a church gathering, he poured the same passion and dedication into cooking that he brought to every aspect of his life. His barbecue sauce, famous throughout the community, became one of his signature creations. While he took the secret recipe with him, the memories made around his table and the meals he shared will continue to be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to enjoy them.

Tripp’s dependability and care for others were extraordinary. There was very little he would not do for someone, whether it was rescuing them from the side of the road with a flat tire or educating them on the best way to fix something.

Tripp’s love for his wife and daughters was beyond measure. He showed them every single day, in countless ways, how deeply he loved them and how they were the greatest blessing and purpose of his life. His presence was larger than life, his generosity knew no bounds, and his impact on those around him will be felt for years to come. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy lives on through the family he adored, the community he served, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

Visitation will be held at Ott Funeral home on Wednesday, June 24, 2026,6-00 pm–8:00 pm. The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Branchville Baptist Church, 11:00 am burial will follow the service at Heaton Cemetery in Reevesville on Hoot Owl Road.

Memorials can be made to Branchville Baptist Church at PO Box 116, Branchville, SC 29432.

I wish I could breathe life back in him, if I could I'd hunt him again tomorrow. - Ben Rodgers Lee
