Lack of rain and deer have hurt me this year. Electric fence is not keeping them out this year so we did a combo of plot saver and spraying all of the sunflowers with this stuff last week: https://helenaagri.com/our-expertise...rch/trico-pro/. It's only been about a week but it seems to be keeping them out. We had to replant about 20%. Those late sunflowers probably won't make by Labor Day but hopefully we have enough time for them to develop fully.

I saw some fields last year that were planted in sunflowers late summer after the corn was harvested. Not sure how much seed they produced by they definitely flowered.

We have a lot of corn, very clean corn, with the need for more rain.

We experimented with some no Till this year. We no-Tilled sunflowers into standing wheat from last winter and for some reason the deer did not mess with those. I think it was because they had to hunt for them. When they got in the open areas they could just eat a whole patch without having to hunt for the sunflowers down in the wheat. We also did not have to do any pre-emergent in those areas and the standing wheat kept the sickle pod that is my nemesis from popping up everywhere.

Speaking of problem weeds and such, Johnson grass is my biggest adversary. That stuff is of the devil. Has anybody had any luck getting rid of it outside of glyphosate? It’s too late for this year but curious if anyone else fights it. Fortunately, my flowers are still doing great. I just have some Johnson grass patches that are a pain.
