As a retaliatory measure, what do you think about a bill preventing the commercial sale of red snapper in SC?

Who has Don Jr’s number. Need to get him in his dad’s ear and take care of the bureaucrats that came up with this nonsense.

How about politicians/leadership in Columbia just pass a law that tells the DNR to not enforce Federal Fisheries rules nor assist Federal officers. That’ll pretty much nix the whole thing.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Nah, I'm not going to take money away from these commercial guys, most live a hard scrabble life and don't support the move that the few big industrial guys have on "it's ours, not yours". They just need to be held to the same or similar restrictions as the rec guy that gets to spend a few days a year on the water. As long as the resource isn't raped, there are enough to go around. The problem with Federal Fisheries management is that A) the commercial lobby has way too much input and B) the Feds tend to take nuclear bomb to the rec side where a scalpel will do. The Scarp is an MPA on bottom fishing now, ridiculous.
Yesterday on the north side of the GTH we were working a section of bottom with an anchored up commercial boat, the registration on that boat was NC. Why the hell is a NC registered boat working a bottom at the GTH. What made matters even worse was that we watched them continually throwing trash off the boat. Just crap floating in the water.
We loaded the fish box with grouper and snapper though, so that was good. Highlight of the day was trolling out to look at another deep spot, one of the lines went down and we were all thinking wahoo they way it was dumping. Nope, solid 300# Blue Marlin. First billfish on my boat and first billfish for BigBrother who got the reel.

A. Federal waters.
B. The commercial fleet is a shadow of its old self.
C. MPAs are ONE of the reasons we have an abundance of RS
D. So If you can’t afford a $30k + boat you don’t get to eat RS? Sounds pretty entitled to me. What else you want to ban? No sale of beef unless you own a cattle farm? Banning
Sale of RS is perhaps the stupidest idea I’ve heard all year on here.
the commercial guys are scraping
Buy and pretty efficiently feeding the public on a cost effective scale, not getting rich doing it.
Agree with the nuke and scalpel analogy. Good point.
What’s the cycle on an MPA? They shut down the entire Winyah Scarp to bottom fishing years ago. Areas like the Parking Lot and right up to it still produce solid fishing, GTH has so much bottom around it it’s crazy. We find new stuff every trip. I wouldn’t say MPA’s are the reason for the abundance of ARS though, draconian management of the fishery is but at the detriment of other reef species that are now suffering.

The feds would stop funding DNR if they break the current contract to enforce federal laws. It would be around a $450,000 cut. I could make it up with higher fees on commercial guys. I don't want to hurt them either but one sided commercial protection ain't working for me.

Getting Don Jr on the phone and POTUS involved seems most expedient.

One sided protection? I guess you haven’t been to any of the working docks lately that have provided fresh seafood to the public for The last 100 years. That’s where seafood comes from for most people. Most people don’t own a tier 5 or what ever bullshit you have center console. Murrells Inlet? G town? Shem? They’re all gone. Probably never coming back(as far as a working waterfront goes) the playthings of the rich have taken over. You can blame market forces, over regulation, what ever, but hard to believe the “commercial lobby” is larger than the sportie lobby. You can always go and try to buy a SG1 or 2 permit if you want to keep more for yourself. Trust me the last few bandit guys left that are hanging on by a thread, are NOT your perceived enemy who you want to put out of business. What happened to the fleet in Murrells is sad. Pushed out to make a fake seafood tourist trap.
The fact that we still have no data on the recreational side is what disappoints me the most about it getting held up in court.
The conspiracy side of me says SAMFS wasn't ready for actual data. If we had actual data from recreational fishing guys, they no longer get to make it up.
I truly don't know if the numbers they estimate are spot on, 300% high, or 500% low.
I was looking forward to seeing what actual recreational reports show from FL to NC.
I have a theory on where the majority of recreational fish are killed but want verification.
While the Southeastern Fisheries Association (SFA) is based in Florida, the lawsuit was explicitly filed by the SFA on behalf of its broader membership, which spans the Southeast coast. More importantly, the lawsuit explicitly targets and halts the individual Exempted Fishing Permits (EFPs) granted to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
By suing to strike down South Carolina's specific state permit, the SFA directly aligned itself against South Carolina’s recreational economy, state agencies, and coastal small businesses (like charter captains and tackle shops). Any commercial fisherman or seafood wholesaler in South Carolina who pays dues to or is a member of the SFA is actively funding the legal blockade against SC recreational anglers.
Either write things worth reading, or do things worth writing.
This lawsuit was a spit in the face on southeastern recreational Anglers looking to harvest red snapper, plain and simple.
At $35-40 a pound with the skin on who the hell is buying red snapper right now?
\"I never saw a wild thing feel sorry for itself. A small bird will drop dead frozen from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.\" <br />D.H. LAWRENCE
I view the resource as a shared resource provided maximum sustainable limits are present.
I don't favor recreational over commercial. People have the right to eat fish no matter if they come from a commercial vessel or a tier 5 one provided reasonable laws apply equally to all.
Either write things worth reading, or do things worth writing.
