    Default Remington 1100 Problems

Have a mid 70's gun that has sentimental value.

It will not shoot more than once and the second shell hangs up before it gets to the chamber. Light loads or heavy... does not matter.

Replaced the recoil spring in the stock. Taken apart the entire gun and cleaned. Gas ports are open. O ring is fine. Light lube. Chamber has been scotchbrited. Magazine spring looks good as does the tube.

    What am I missing?

I put TWO o rings on it just now and will see if that makes a difference tomorrow.

If I can't get it running, who is the guru to take it to?

Take a really small drill bit that will fit in the gas port. Should be close to a 3/32. Hold it with a pair of needle nose pliers and run it in and out of the gas ports like a reamer.

Is it throwing the spent hull? Is second shell feeding on to ramp? Or just partial feeding?
If so, check the feed ramp. Sometimes the feed ramp gets worn and gets a ledge on it where she’ll hits it coming out. I call it a ledge, the ramp comes up to a semi circle hump that kicks it up. If where low angle of ramp meet the jump is squared off it’s worn out. That will catch the shell as it comes out of magazine. It can also get bent if your get a glove caught in it, and jerk it out, in some hot and heavy pheasant shooting! Ask me how I know!!!
Maybe replace the magazine feed spring. A weak magazine spring may not push it out hard enough.
My mid seventies gun was doing the same. Replaced worn and bent ramp and magazine spring. And it works fine with 1200 fps clays loads and heavier. Still doesn’t like 1150 load.

You can buy most of the parts from Numrich online.

If it’s throwing the first shell and then the bolt is locking open as if magazine is empty then the problem is in the carrier (what I called feed ramp earlier), or something in the carrier mechanism. Carrier or the carrier mechanism that releases the bolt and raises the carrier. It’s a little tedious but not hard to do yourself.
If it’s throwing the shell and locking back. then you have enough gas to work the bolt.

3/32 is too big for the ports... I shined a light and can see through the ports well

If it’s kicking out the first shell it shouldn’t be the gas ports

So….. does that mean it’s not ejecting spent shell?

Yes... just not throwing the next one in there.

I have another 12 gauge "Upland Special" that I've never shot. I'm taking the trigger group out and will try it tomorrow. Then I can concentrate on the rails, I guess.

The carrier "seems" to be working. I can have an empty chamber and load one shell in the mag, pull the trigger on an empty chamber, and then when I pull the bolt back, the next shell will be lifted so that when you hit the button, it will chamber.

Are you trying it with multiple shells in the magazine? Put in as many as it will hold. That might help you tell if it's a weak mag spring.

Make sure the two metal rings are oriented correctly, not being facing the right direction has caused similar problems for me in the past.
