Depends, its hard to beat yellowmouth/edge or scamp, snowie's good too. ARS and vermillion aren't the best table fare but those Silk and Blackfin are dang good.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Use a Uni to Uni, rarely gets past the floro if you're worried about that. You can also pinch on a split shot. I let mine go to the hook, hits bottom and the bait swims/floats up.

In an earlier post you said to fish 15-30 ft from the bottom. Are you letting the sinker hit the bottom then letting the bait swim 15-30ft?

Not on live/cut bait. I fish jigs 15-30' up.

I don't usually fish live/cut bait on bottom rigs unless I put down a whole B-liner on the bent butt or fishing deep with the electrics. I like the action and strike of the jigs, fish don't tend to pick at them as much because they are moving more. Even the deep stuff if you can get the jig down, the strikes and fish are usually harder and bigger, you will just get 1 out of 20 to the boat and feed sharks with the rest.

    No doubt!

They will be all over the inshore reefs soon. Already stacking up in the 50ft range.

Shit, I’ve caught them at North Island and Davidson. Dinks but it’s a good fight on a 3000 size reel.

Had fresh gag for supper last night, wished it was scamp but still good.

Grouper getting wife caught it Sunday for Mother's Day.

She strongly encouraged us to stop on the way in from the ledge so she could catch a grouper.

Commercial Fishermen and their Alliance have filed a lawsuit and the courts have issued a temporary injunction on the EFP for red snapper. The season is closed before it began.

On May 21, 2026, a rogue federal judge sided with activists in an attempt to block Floridians from exercising their right to fish through the recently approved Exempted Fishing Permit (EFP) for Atlantic Red Snapper issued by NOAA Fisheries earlier this month.
As a result of this ruling, NOAA has temporarily stalled Florida‘s Atlantic Red Snapper EFP. However, the agencies stand together in opposition of this delay tactic and will continue fighting for our fishing communities.
To that end, to ensure our anglers can get out on the water as planned beginning this weekend, FWC has modified its plans that will ensure access to fishing in our state waters. Effective May 21, FWC will rescind EO 26-11. Doing so will allow for the public to carry on with their plans on the water, including the ability to catch red snapper in state waters. As authorized by Florida Administrative Code, the recreational bag limit will default to 2 red snapper per person with a 20-inch size limit and remain in effect until further notice.
As for Florida’s historic EFP, when the EFP is unfrozen and ultimately restored, FWC will issue an updated EO reestablishing the extended red snapper season, which will increase the nautical miles available for fishing. Moreover, FWC officers have been notified of the unpredictable nature of the situation and will ensure boaters are provided education within our jurisdictional waters."

Due to a recent court order, the red snapper exempted fishing permits issued by NOAA Fisheries to the four South Atlantic states, including South Carolina, have been suspended until further notice. This means that SCDNR cannot issue permits for the red snapper fishing beginning July 1, 2026, as planned. Please stay tuned for further updates as they become available. This action does not affect red snapper harvest in state waters, where there is no closed season and anglers may keep up to two fish with a minimum size of 20 inches per day.
