Look forward to this season the most but hate when it ends especially when theres 2 weeks left. Killed #1 a week into the season and then #2 weeks later. Now im twitching my thumbs waiting for next year to do it again.
Both hunts combined lasted about 25 minutes from time of the first gobble.
#1 didnt hear a thing until 930, walked across the whole property "camping out" for 15ish minutes in different places. On the way back i told my "partner for the morning" id give it one last call approaching a powerline. I throw some yelps out and he cuts me off at 50yds. We sit down quick on a fire line, im on a curve and my spectator a bit back. He proceeds to gobble at every thing closing the distance fast. He proceeds to strut, gobble, drum, and double drum (never heard this before) all at 25 yds. My spectator has a clear view of him for 15 minutes and watched the whole show. Unfortunately for me he didnt come up the fireline like I thought he would and instead came through an 'as-thick-as-you-can-find' myrtle thicket. So I couldn't see a thing. I finally scratch in the pinestraw and he finally steps into the fireline he slightly turns away so I let him have it. For me it was the most drumming I have heard (I usually dont hear it unless they're super close) and the first time my spectator heard and knew what it was. I have to give a shout out to her for being ice cold. Never once did I have to worry about a mis step or unnecessary movement. Raised right and has killed many herself.
#2 Read the script of exactly the way I expected him to. Roosted in the edge of a bottom on a transition to some somewhat grown up-thinned pines. He flew down into the pines and walked the edge of the transition straight to the gun. Breathing fire the whole way. Shot him at 20 steps. And turned out to be a pretty good one. From first gobble in the tree at 0620, to feet touching the ground at 636 to dead at 642. Almost hate it was over so fast.
By far my favorite thing now is showing them to my kids. They get very excited and little girl is already asking when she can "go pow a turkey"
Thankful for great friends, my family and the Eastern Wild Turkey.
