Default Yamaha 25 2 stroke gear shift problem

Got the water pump in. New problem and here's some back story. Last August hour sheepshead fishing and cranked up to move spots, shifted into reverse and hit something under a dock motor shut down complete stop. From that point it would not go into reverse but I could go forward. When I got home, I managed to be able to move the prop in Reverse again. Fast forward the last week when I went to change the impeller and finished up that job, when I Am shifting from forward back to neutral it wants to slip into forward. It does not seem to do that from reverse to neutral. When I do find neutral with the motor shut off there is no grinding or clicking so I don't think something's broken gear wise. I have moved the coupling nut and the blocker nut in the linkage up and down trying to find a sweet spot but can't seem to find one. How far down most of the time does that couple nut need to be on the lower gear shaft? Is there also the possibility that the clutch dog needs replacing and if so how big of a pain is it to pull the gear carrier out of the lower unit?

Sounds like the clutch dog or something that will require you to take out the shaft and investigate. It can be done but be prepared for at least a 4-5 beer job. I’ve had to do the same thing on a little 9.9 and it wasn’t too bad just kind of aggravating.

There are videos. I just wanting 100% sure that that was my issue but it sounds like I need to go buy a gear puller.

Did it get knocked into wrong gear while you had it down replacing the impeller?

It's like there is wiggle room at neutral and it wants to slide forward.

My 25 yamaha 2005 model wont stay in reverse. You have to hold it in reverse or it will jump back into neutral
