Thanks all. I was able to fly my son in from college to be there and the vet did great. First time I've euthanized an animal and it sucked.

God works as only he can...came home after dropping son back at airport and neighbor had a new puppy! Will do for now.

I hear ya brother and it does suck.
But it's also a honor to be there when they take their last breath.

    I've always cherished this-

    A Dog's prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world, is more grateful for kindness than mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for although I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when I hear your step.

When the weather is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer used to the bitter elements, and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I would not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding. To walk by your side, standing ready to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And master, when I am very old, if the greatest master sees fit to deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away. Rather see that my trusting life is taken gently and I shall leave you knowing with the last breath I draw, my life was always safe in your hand.

Prayers for you all. They leave a void only filled by the next one.

Having a vet you trust there to do it makes a difference.
When I had to do it with Jake we went to Glenn.

I spoke with him via text the morning of and somewhere in the conversation he used the term “cowboy code” in regards to letting me know what had to be done. It immediately made me think of the scene in Lonesome Dove where they hang Jake Spoon and Gus is expressing his sorrow to which Jake replied “well hell boys, I’d damn sight rather be hung by me friends than by a bunch of damned strangers”

I drove 1.5hrs to see Glenn, passed two vets in town on the way there.

I’d damn sure rather have someone put down my dog that had hunted with him and knew what he meant to me than by anyone else

So let us not grow weary of doing what is good; for if we don’t give up, we will in due time reap the harvest. Galatians 6:9
