I support unlimited safety checks at boat landings for boaters in the make ready lane prior to launching. If you are really concerned with my safety, check me BEFORE I get on the water, not at 4pm as I am approaching the landing to recover my boat. The whole country is watching Florida after its law changed last year.

Ed takes his job very seriously. I don’t know of anything Ed has ever done that was unscrupulous. My knowledge of Ed has always been that he is tough, but fair. Does he have a hard on for dog hunters whose dogs “can’t read posted signs”? Yep. If that is a problem for someone, a gaze toward the mirror may be in order. I have asked Ed for help several times when I knew folks were poaching on a place that I had. He did his job both times.

It got me too. I read the first post of one on my page and it said he was involved in the spotlighting case as well.

Never had any issues with Stephen Bryant. He and Richland County seem or seemed to be top notch. However he was doing something wrong. His wife works for SLED so it can be assumed this was investigated very in depth.

A well known person is taking some of the credit for having him fired. Apparently an arrest over BUI that was lied about under oath but I think you’ll find that abuse of power will come to light if I had to guess.

Someone will come along soon and blame the officer’s actions and behavior on “exuberance.”

^this 100%. If you wanna really improve safety, check folks before they go out, not after they come back. Make it educational instead of enforcement. Could be a good job for someone (younger) without a badge, looking to see if law enforcement/compliance is a career path for them. Some other state agencies (not SC) do a 2in1 deal for invasive species/live well/bilge and safety checks (not performed by LEO). The same could be done by SCDNR if they really wanted to move that needle.

I understand the thought process of checking before someone goes out on the water. If they check before they get in the water then unsafe boats won’t be on water. But… if they checked everyone at ramp on the way out, some of you would then bitch that they backed up the boat ramp. I wouldn’t want to subject myself that shit show if I were a warden.
They would never write a ticket if they did that, because the boat never hit the water, and there are some idiots out there who will, consistently, not comply if you don’t hit them in the wallet.
When and where they check boats should be irrelevant as long as they are courteous, expedient and consistent.

DRDUCK, so is your case the one this guy was fired over? The info I got is exactly as you stated. Lied on report and then asked 2 others to lie also.

I'd be in favor of voluntary courtesy checks at the ramp prior to launch but not mandatory, especially in the make ready lane. And unless they have probable cause, no evidence gathering, I mean "safety" checks on the water either. This isn't England. Yet.

The GW picked on the wrong guy down in Florida. Watching that video was almost "is this GE serious or punking the guy".

Sounds like DNR is trying to distance themself from the wrong that was done by a public statement, almost appology. Probably worried more about a suit from the citizen than the officer.

I understand and agree with your statement about safety checks before launch could cause backups and wait times that no one would want. Just wanted to point out that, in a perfect world, the goal should be no tickets written.

I've been told the new director is cracking down. Nothing was more was discussed about it.
It's not enough to simply tolerate the 2nd Amendment as an antiquated inconvenience. Caring for the 2nd Amendment means fighting to restore long lost rights.
