To protect a sandbar...

🌊 A global settlement has been reached to permanently protect Captain Sam’s Spit — one of only three undeveloped barrier spits in South Carolina.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🐢 The Spit supports loggerhead sea turtle nesting grounds, denning bobcats, strand-feeding dolphins, and migratory rufa red knots.
💰 The deal: South Carolina will pay $32M, the Town of Kiawah Island $3.7M, and the Conservancy of the Sea Islands $1.3M — resolving a $200M+ legal claim from Kiawah Partners.
🏛️ The land will be divided into two parcels:
— The Highlands → SC Dept. of Natural Resources, designated as a Heritage Trust Preserve
— The Lowlands → State of SC, protected by a 17-page conservation easement stewarded by the Conservancy in perpetuity
🏖️ Beachwalker Park will be conveyed to the Town of Kiawah Island for permanent public access.
⚠️ The agreement is not yet final. The SC legislature must appropriate the $32M before the end of the legislative session or the parties return to litigation.
