Dog treats distributed to five states, including South Carolina, have been recalled after fears surfaced they could be contaminated with salmonella, federal officials said.
Florida-based Elite Treats LLC is recalling the 6-ounce bags of its “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs,” according to a news release Feb. 24 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The product is packaged in a black and gold bag marked on the back side with lot number 24045 and an expiration date of April 2027.
The batch was sold to Florida Hardware LLC which then sold to feed stores in South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.
The contamination was discovered after a third-party laboratory tested the treats and identified the contamination in a related, but commercially unreleased, lot of the same product, the FDA said.
People can also become exposed to this pathogen through multiple routes, such as handling the contaminated treats, contact with pets who have eaten it and contact with surfaces that have touched contaminated food, such as bowls, utensils or countertops. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
If a pet has eaten the recalled product or there are concerns that they might be infected, the FDA suggests contacting the pet’s veterinarian.
Consumers who have purchased the bags should cease using them and dispose of them properly. Consumers who purchased the product may email the company or call 561-901-5310 weekdays between 8 a.m.-4 p.m. for information on returning recalled product for a refund or replacement product.
