    Default Mergansers

Don't just eat fish and crawfish.

Here's a feeding frenzy on 25 lbs of shelled corn.

It was back in the 1990's but I blindly picked a place on Lake Moultrie and put out the decoys. Just at daylight, I started getting buzzed by ducks. I threw the gun up a couple of times but noticed they were hooded mergansers so I didn't shoot. Before long, I had, I swear, 500 happy hooded mergansers diving in and around my decoys. I've never seen anything like it before or since. Daylight also brought the realization that someone had baited the shallow slope of the island with wheat. I have never picked up decoys so quickly. I know who lived nearby so I have a few suspects...one or two of them may actually read this post...haha

I don't know if it was baited by someone else, but around 2007ish I had a public spot in the upstate that I would see 100+ mergansers every hunt I went on that season. Never seen anything like it in all of the places I've hunted since.
