First pair of Woodies at my box this morning. Clean them out and get them ready if you have not already done it.

I did mine as soon as I knew that it had been cold enough that the wasps would be gone.

We always notice the shift in our swamp from large flocks to pairs as the season starts to end.

IMO they should go back to closing the season on 1/20 regardless

We had low numbers this year in our area so we will let any that come back between now and the end of the season get a pass. Just because the government says you can keep shooting doesn’t mean you have to.

    Low numbers?
If you are passing judgement on low summerduck numbers based on this seasons sightings, you're off base.
This is the driest fall/winter in SC since the early 90s....many roost locations are dry including a large bay on my place.
And, like I said, summerducks just showed up Wednesday in mass like I haven't seen all season but it typical of seasons past.
ETA, ducks begin pair bonding waaay earlier than most people think, it didn't just start this month!

That was just a local observation and I definitely realize the dry weather had a lot to do with it. I wasn’t trying to make a population wide assessment or assumption based on my small sample size. But my point is if I’m not seeing ducks and having opportunities I’m going to do more work to try to have opportunities next season.

ETA. The major creek bordering our property has a big beaver dam downstream and is holding way more water than it normally would in this drought. Whatever effect that might have.

Cleaned my box out on Friday, and saw a pair there this morning when I was leaving for work.

Atta boy! Kill them if you got 'em as the law allows! I'd bet most of the Woodies here right now are Yankee WODU's anyway.

I clean my duck boxes out in August, with wasp spray in one hand.
