Default Quick dip for Football games this weekend, old Trawler of Mt Pleasant

Made some this am for games this weekend. Great stuff

Some folks here old enough to remember the Trawler Restaurant on Shem Creek , special place in our families heart. Many meals there when parents first bought their first IOP house (it was a deserted Island back in early 1970’s ) Also I recall best part of eating there was the crab dip and for a yongster like myself then always wanting to be there when the Gulf Stream II came to dock. Dad became good friends with GSII owner Mr Pringle and Capt Randy Scott . Capt Randy taught a young wide eyed boy how to tie knots on long rides out to fishing grounds , he always let me ride in the wheel house with him and showed me how to read that old FF and how to read a compass. Dad always had a “men’s day” at the churches he was pastor of where we charted the GSII in spring and fall for fishing trip. We also went several times a year in between.

Came across this in a drawer last night and figured I would share. To me it is more than a basic crab dip but it is good and easy to make (i prefer more horseradish in mine and little Franks )

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I have a Trawler story too but not as cool as yours...When I was growing up one of the few big adventures we could (only very occasionally) afford was a trip from Moncks Corner into Mt Pleasant for a seafood dinner at The Trawler. I never got to ride in the big boats, just a big Delta 88. Like you too, the thing I remember most was the crab dip. Wow, what memories. Thanks again.

    Thanks for sharing.

Ive never been to the Trawler but that recipe looks like the crab dip recipe from The Sea Captain’s House Restaurant in Murrells Inlet. As a kid, I remember going there many Sundays after church and I could’ve eaten my weight in their crab dip.

Thanks for sharing. A blast from the past! My sister was a hostess there for a few years. Mt Pleasant is a whole new world now.

17 North was a bunch of woods, Zack's Fireworks, some basket ladies. Good grief I believe it's been developed straight up to Georgetown.

Was always told he lost Trawler in a card game ?? Not sure how accurate that was. Till it closed we would still hit RB’s quite a bit

Little off topic but neatest story I have was one day we came in from fishing GSII. Dad and I were cleaning fish and couple was talking to Capt Randy on bow of boat.

He came over to my Dad and asked him “Preacher, this couple wants to get married on my boat but I have to be in federal waters to legally marry them. They do not want to go out boat just get married on it. Would you do that “. Well if you knew my Dad NO was not in his vocabulary, Pop looked at Capt Rand and then me and said “Capt you finish cleaning my fish and Tom go get my Bible out of the truck”. Can still see my Dad standing on bow of that boat with everyone from Trawler watching as he wiped off his fishy hands on his cut off jean shorts and proceeded to marry them right there at the dock to the cheers of the restaurant crowd when he was done

Almost exactly how I was taught to make it while living on Hatteras Island for many years.
Except, no horseradish but add a drop or two of worchestershire.
Nothing wrong with heating it up too with less mayo and more crab.
Cream cheese for binder if baking it

Grew up going to The Trawler...back when Shem Creek was a working creek, as opposed to the googan hotbed it has become.

Another great place there on the creek and later out on Sullivans, was LaBrascas/Momma Tea Room....someone told me there is still a LaBrascas pizza operating up in the Cola area?

    Great story.

I think food, and stories about food, are sometimes as much about the memories as they are about the food itself. If that makes any sense.

We made it growing up but like ECU said, we used a dash of worchestershire. Also, the soft shell crab sandwich at RB's before the fire was the best. At least as a kid. I believe they took it off menu afterwards.

I agree, like I said it is “just a simple crab dip” but as you get older I think you appreciate the tradtions and things that went on earlier in life and especially memories of those that are no longer with us . And if you knew my Dad you KNEW he loved to eat and always knew best local places to go. Sullivan’s was another long time favorite of our family and knew those owners as well. Funniest thing is Dad would tell folks they had to go to Bowens Island (the original one ) and some folks would pull up and not want to get out but after they did they fell in love.

Guess I am going down memory lane this weekend, that Trawler Recipe I came across really brought back lot of memories

Not yet but Gtown is next. Gtown needs new life and development, the town is actually shrinking.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
