Default Mobile phone to Satellite connectivity

Have any of y'all used it yet? How well did it work? We are adding Starlink at camp which will be an incredible upgrade from cellular only.

I've been toying with upgrading my old Iphone 12 mainly to have the ability to add satellite service in case of an emergency.

"T-Mobile has officially launched its T-Satellite service, a satellite-to-mobile connectivity solution powered by Starlink, enabling text messaging and emergency services in areas without cellular coverage.
As of January 10, 2026, the service is available to T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon customers with compatible devices, with most users paying $10 per month, though subscribers on T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond and Go5G Next plans receive it at no additional cost."

I have it on T-Mobile and I believe it's only through text at this point. Calling hasn't been released yet, but I could be wrong.

If you're already adding Starlink, why the need to upgrade the phone? Starlink will give you internet, text, and WiFi calling right there at camp through WiFi (Starlink). Now, if you're concerned about being able to text "away" from camp, then yes, you'll want to upgrade/change plans to T-Mobile. They have the nations best network anyway, and they just merged with US Cellular or Consumer Cellular which only increases their coverage. Stay away from att or Verizon.

One of our buddies dropped his Starlink off on our porch when they went upriver for a couple days. We plugged it in and it was ridiculous. Wifi calling alone and being able to Facetime my bride and grands to show them the camp was incredible. My Cajun buddies got the roam feature to move it from home to camp to watch LSU football. It blew my mind how that thing could handle 5-6 phones and streaming at the same time. My son said we had to have it so we got a standard system just for our camp. We don't watch tv but having the ability to all call out to check in on our family is nice. (I'm not going to lie, I do miss the old days of being completely out of touch for a week at a time)

My Iphone 12 isn't compatible for the mobile to satellite upgrade with Tmobile though. I hate the thought of upgrading phones but if folks have good coverage and experience with satellite mobile I'd consider it mainly for safety in the marsh. (breakdown or injury). Right now I have a handheld VHF which given my proximity to ships, crew boats and charter boats I think they'd pick up my VHF but I'd like to add a backup plan if not.

Gotcha. Yeah. For being away from camp and needing/wanting the service, I would go with T-Mobile. I've enjoyed their service. I've gone in a "hole" twice since I've had their service and I immediately get a notification that I am now on satellite. Like I said, I believe that is only through text at this point with the phone service being released sometime in '26. Still, I can go pretty much anywhere and have some sort of communication if needed.

It worked well for me last spring break when we went off grid in Montana

You can’t make calls or send any pictures, but it works well for text to check in

That'd be a great backup option to text for help if needed or check in with buddies if running late.

Thanks for the input! I'll be upgrading my phone. Nice thought to be able to reach out or be reached when solo in the woods or on the water.
