Default DNR closes WMA for bait

    BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. —
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has temporarily closed approximately 54 acres of the Victoria Bluff WMA in Beaufort County to hunting after bait was discovered in the area.

Officials say the closure has been clearly posted with signs and will remain in effect until further notice.

Officers will be closely monitoring the site, and anyone hunting in the closed area will be charged.

It is illegal to shoot into, onto, or across WMA areas closed to hunting, or to attempt to take wildlife within a closed area.

The department is also reminding the public that hunting violations can be reported anonymously by contacting the Operation Game Thief Hotline at 1-800-922-5431 or submitting a tip by texting 847411 (TIP411) with the keyword SCDNR and your tip information.

The fagbook comments are such that SCDNR "should have" cleaned up every kernel of the corn instead of the closure.

what do you think should've been done? or does it not matter since you have your own family land?

Even if they had cleaned it up you still have the 10 day rule after all bait is gone.

I’ve got an idea. Just don’t hunt where it’s posted. If you do you risk being charged.

    I don’t see the problem.

Why would they not have set up a sting operation and catch the people throwing out the bait……
“Duck hunting gives a man a chance to see the loneliest places …blinds washed by a rolling surf, blue and gold autumn marshes, …a rice field in the rain, flooded pin-oak forests or any remote river delta. In duck hunting the scene is as important as the shooting.” ~ Erwin Bauer, The Duck Hunter’s Bible, 1965

Because DNR would need solid proof of who put the bait out in the first place. Anyone hunting there could defend the charge by saying they didn't know it was baited. Not a case likely to succeed in conviction.

Why wouldn’t you get the corn up, don’t say shit, and just keep an eye on it. No glory in that I guess.

Due to the legal requirements to declare all bait has been removed, DNR should complete their investigation and remove the bait and post the 10 notice.

They are the custodians of the land, it should be there job IMO.

It's illegal to for the public to plant on WMA...they didn't need to catch them hunting it to make a case.

If you get caught hunting in there, what evidence does DNR have that you illegally planted a WMA?

I would say yes…I sure would.

Or just hunt the other 923 acres and go about my business.

I’m too busy to hunt anyway.

Pictures? DNA? Cell phone records? Eye witnesses?

As I said. Get the bait gone and carry on. You ain’t gonna catch the perpetrators anyway, why punish the masses? They just want some material to post to put shine on them.

Were they baiting deer or ducks?

I agree, they should have set up a sting operation with those ground mole cameras that pick up voice conversations. If they let them set up and start shooting, they would have a strong case with the violators on tape talking about the bait.

Some fellas got caught baiting WMA in Newberry years ago. Used the same pull off parking area to a river bottom that I used. They stopped showing up one weekend and I heard why from another guy that hunted the same area.

No signs. No closures. Just two less knuckleheads in the woods.

Just hope the anti-hunters don't spread the vibe.
