Took our oldest grandson (10 yrs old ) yesterday, actually won a 20ga pump shotgun couple years ago that was still in box so I put it in my vehicle in case he wanted to shoot.
Great kid just he is like his Dad in that hunting is not that big of a deal with him(he is getting into fishing last 2-3 yrs though ) but never really pushed it. Even his other Granddad mentioned to me other day we got to get him on a deer , he has been but just never had desire to shoot one .. They are both live for baseball/basketball/football , in fact his Dad has not picked up his golf clubs in 4 yrs or so just to make sure he has time for his boys and their sports
First thing he asked is did I have a gun he could use so pulled that 20ga out and showed him how to operate it . At that point I knew I would not be shooting which was fine with me. Worked with him on distance and all the little things we “just know” and also explained how shotguns/shotgun shells work
Well 2 birds came in to our right and he swung and dropped one, had to contain my excitement but the smile on his face was worth it all. 1 shot 1 bird. He ended up killing 2 birds with 2 shots but it was very slow afternoon however we were in a place for comfort and safety instead of a good location for birds but worked for us.
Personally never been so happy about a 2 bird day but that was all I needed and since school night we left before birds really cranked up
End of day that was one of those days as a GrandDad you live for
