Default Height for fake power lines ?

We are needing to put up some fake power lines around our dove field

Client of mine has some poles 16’ and some 25’.

Would the shorter ones work ? It is in a wide open field that has sunflowers and millet

You'd want to aim at the head if you were shooting a bird off of one.. at 16 feet above ground that's not that tall, much less how deep you'll have to set them

I’d go with the 25’. You’re going to need to stick them 4-5’ in the ground

I’d put it high enough you can drive a decent sized piece of equipment under it for sure.

Call your local power company. I got a couple of old poles from mine. I used a chain saw and cut them all at 32 ft. I put them 4.5 ft in ground ( as far as my auger would go). It works really well. I would try to get it as high as possible.

What everyone else said. Not sure how high ours are, but 16 will be awfully low once they’re set. 30 would be a lot better.

I had a 4 acre backyard dove field at my last house. Got some free poles and when they were delivered the tractor trailer got stuck in the front yard. I think they were around 20’ tall after putting them in the ground. It was pretty sketchy with a ladder in the back of a truck putting the wire up.

Find you a line crew working in the area, if they are from out of town you could offer them a place to park their trucks in exchange for them setting you a few of the old poles they are replacing.

Higher the better. The fake line my brother and myself built were with old 70 tall poles. We sawed the top couple of feet out of each one. The wire should be 52-58 feet above the ground with the sag. The doves will use that line 3 to 1 if not more compared to the B phase line the local coop has on the other edge of the field built on 35 foot poles. That line is 28 feet at the highest point.

One of those old boogery climbers and a power pole is why I haven't used one since the beginning of the 90s. That contraption while my rifle was on my shoulder slid down like Thunder Mountain on me in one of our old fields one afternoon.. ha, when I saw Tater post up that it brought up those memories again.
