Default Need Help with a Silent Menace

I got divorced four years ago, and with her also went her four feline killing machines. I have had a mouse/mice issue since that hard freeze this year. The little bastard chewed on my guitar cases in my music room and caused the last two plumbing issues by chewing through pex. The latest incident was this weekend when he chewed a rubber hose on my dishwasher.

I have tried snap traps, sticky traps, and even poison. To date, I have no evidence of any deaths. They tripped the traps and ate the peanut butter, and eluded or avoided my sticky traps. I have ordered electric traps based on some advice, but would really be willing to try any...other than the return of my ex, and her feline horde.

I am not against renting a barn cat if you have one that you promise to come and get when its over. What say the braintrust? What is the most effective way of ridding myself of these assholes? Thanks, MG

You don't have a mouse. You have mice.

I've never met one decon wouldn't kill. I get the green blocks and toss them in and under places my dogs can't reach.

A rat snake in the crawl space or attic will work too.

We had some straight killers for a while. I mean these things would walk through my yard carrying squirrels. Man across the street trapped them and took them off. Now there are just 2 young ones. Snakes and all other critters population have rebounded pretty well because of what that old man did.

Set a mouse trap. Slide it into a wide mouth Mason jar on its side. Prop said jar so it won't roll. This will serve as a funnel for your problem mice.

Put the peanut butter at the back of the pad so they have to step on it to eat it all

Never. Unfortunately, the cats were a package deal with the ex. One cat we had was not only a squirrel and mouse killer but also would dig for moles and absolutely stacked bodies.

Decon ordered, Viktor electric traps ordered. My step dog is very food motivated, so I am going to have to get creative. MG

Those black plastic traps, I think called "tomcat" work really well. The rat snake idea is better.

Make sure limbs and branches are trimmed away from your house. We had some coming in through the attic.

I'd lend you my cat but my wife's frenchies killed it and it was hell on mice. But I second the decon method.

Place snap traps with the trigger facing a wall or obstacle where they travel. Don't even need to bait.

I got Mouse-X at Lowes for the duck camp. It’s supposed to be safe for dogs if they ingest it. A poisoned mouse can still be poisonous to dogs if they eat it. It seemed to work pretty good. We have a soybean field surrounding two sides and an overgrown deep ravine on one side. We have had some major infestations over the years. We have feral barn cats around the house that we feed and they have done a good job here.

Put the decon in a blue bird house, laid on it's side. No pets can get the bait.

A mouse trap will work with cheese.

We had this problem in our old house. I bought old school Tom Kat mouse traps and rolled up cheese in a tiny ball and stuck it on there. Killed the shit out them. My wife was ready to burn it to the ground.

I am not sure if I could stand the awkward meetings for transfers in the Chick-fil-A parking lot on Friday afternoons, but if this poison does not work, I may look into it. MG

I have not had visuals on the bastards so I am not sure. I know it is hard to determine by the size of holes they can fit through but I just made an assumption it was mice nots rats. I assume the poison is a solution for either? MG

Look for droppings, those bastards shit on everything. The size of the turds will tell you which you’re dealing with. I absolutely hate those nasty things. They wreaked havoc on our lodge a couple of years and we had to steam clean everything including the furniture. Last year one chewed through a pex toilet supply line under a raised floor and flooded part of the lodge. God only knows how long it leaked before one of the guys found it. Rats and mice are my only phobia in life. I don’t run and jump on the table but I find it hard to sleep knowing those nasty fuckers are in the building. We’ve spent a small fortune on steel wool and spray foam trying to keep them out. Good luck.
