    Default Disposal/Dishwasher outlet ?

    Alright,

I don't know much about electricity...or plumbing, but know enough to be dangerous...

Noticed the dishwasher was not turning on. Unplug it, and the disposal, and swap their position on the outlet. The disposal turned on in the top plug, while the dishwasher still did nothing on the bottom...but the disposal switch next to the sink was in the off position.

Is this because the top plug is "live" for the dishwasher (not switched), and the bottom is for the disposal (switched)...? Or is my house about to burn down?

It’s very possible it’s wired that way.

If it is done like that and one half of the receptacle is switched then you are going to have to break the tab on the new receptacle when you replace it. And there’s going to be a 3rd wire switch leg coming into the receptacle box as well to operate the switched side of the receptacle .

FYI if you ever get into a situation on an older home or remodel job and you see a white wire with strips of black on it that’s the previous electricians way of telling you he was using the white wire as a hot wire. Usually called a switch loop, Very common back in the day but no longer up to code

So with that being said, checked the breaker, etc...is it likely my dishwasher crapped out? Everything was working fine yesterday.

I am not comfortable enough to do this myself. Just trying to get an idea of what is going on

Personally I would check the receptacle with a meter or a receptacle tester first but if I’m reading and understanding your issue correctly then yes, the dishwasher could be going out

If the dishwasher side ran the disposal it’s good. Pull the kick plate off the dw and check the connection.

Why don’t you run a drop cord to the dishwasher from an outlet you know works if it has a regular wired plug? If it doesn’t work issue is with the dishwasher. Checking the outlet with a volt meter will certain,y tell you if outlet has power but doesn’t answer question about outlet for dishwasher not being switched. And what Charlie Horse said.
