I guess we should all just be happy that vehicle and boat sales taxes are capped at $500. I don't think I could stomach paying 4 grand in sales tax on a $50,000 vehicle.

One time $4k sales tax, or lifetime property tax?

    Sales tax for $1000, Alex.

I have not paid over $20k for a vehicle for myself or my wife since 2006 when I made my first and last stupid decision of buying a new vehicle.

Been a while since I posted that link but we may just have the group headed to washington to get it passed. Make some noise.

It is absolutely to generate revenue.

The same usage part you are talking about I believe would be the registration with the DMV. Which is the same no matter value of vehicle I believe.

You never truly own property, be it land, house, car, boat….I’d be in favor of paying an uncapped sales tax at purchase rather than pay property tax every year.

The reason no one has given you a reason other than to generate revenue is because that is the answer. Tax is legalized theft. The thieves want to maximize their score, so they set the rules to maximize their score. You knew the answer before you started this conversation.

The house will propose a way to eliminate state income tax this year.

With a corresponding increase in property and sales taxes, along with new service fees, to offset the revenue loss?

Not sure yet. It is not free to live in Texas, Tenn or Florida but they have no state income tax.

My property taxes were $28.00 this year. Full coverage on same truck isn’t much either.

Pretty much so , takes money to run the services we require. Gonna get it one way or another

Honestly SC taxes pretty damn cheap property and income to be honest.

Get clients move in from other states, had one in office yesterday from Arizona. They laugh when we talk about taxes in SC

Drawing huge influxes from CA and NY from real estate folks telling me

I am not totally against tax as I understand it is a necessary function at some capacity. I’m just not quite sure how we have gotten to the point where there is zero accountability for the “spending” side of it. My guess is if there was transparency on how the money was actually used and the “unnecessary” spending, we would lose our minds.

It takes a lot to operate Bobby. In our area we spend tax dollars on such:
    -salaries and benefits
-building maintenance (cleaning, repairs, painting, electrical, roofs, hvac)
-park maintenance (mowing, storm cleanup, asphalt maintenance/sidewalks, vandalism, playgrounds)
    -fleet (trucks, tractors, mowers)
We try to do everything we can in house to stretch the dollars. We do get more funds from hotels/restuarant tax than property taxes. Keeping officers on the streets has gotten very expensive, but the they are needed and the public requires them.

Property tax funds local government, city and county. There are limits on increases. Schools are funded by state and local funds.

State sales tax is 6% and is approx 48% of SC revenue. Anything beyond 6% goes to local government. The state has placed limits on local govt sales tax. Local government can exceed the limits by the citizens vote in a referendum.

State income tax is 45% of total state income. I imagine an increased sales tax will be proposed if income tax is eliminated.

Let’s say I buy a 2022 $70,000 boat and I have to pay $2000 is property taxes (which is criminal to charge that much). Another guy has a 10 year old boat and pays $500 in taxes. We will even go a step further and say the guy with the cheaper boat uses his 3x as much. Ethically speaking, how do you justify that????? Because in theory, I have more money (which may or may not be true)?

    This.

When we were handling my wife’s grandfathers estate, one thing that stuck out to me was the mortgage documentation the late 50s when he got the house.

The original Taxes, insurance and mortgage was less a month than his just the tax bill was the year he passed.

Now he paid that house and off in 1970s……

I get that 100% and I am not “anti tax” at all basically level. What we have now is out of control and there is no checks and balances.

You can see purchasing records for most every city and county in South Carolina. Your elected officials and hired administrators are checks/balances. There are also state and local procurement guidelines we have to follow. SCBO posts all competitive bids for the state. If you want change start with your local county government elected officials.

    This.

I see it on a small scale being school board , just like any other business costs rise for quality employees (or ANY employees for that matter) , insurance costs skyrocket and other things . But government agencies can come up with more programs that you can shake a stick at and MORE training or education that you can imagine . I do understand training and continuing education but I will put it in my daughters words when she was working on her Master’s Degree. “Daddy this whole system is screwed up, I am paying The State of SC (Clemson ) basically so in return the THE STATE will pay me more. Not that I am not learning some things in my Masters program but a lot of money and time just get paid more “

But I am sure there is waste and fluff in most private for profit industries as well, and yes we still foot the bill even though we think it is voluntary LOL

Honestly I think our state does it right, low income tax and sales tax capped on autos and things like that .

The thing that schools deal with are aging blogs , you can figure on at least 60 yrs out of a bldg or more BUT it comes with lot of maint and repairs and construction costs are through the roof and I do not see them coming down . With the huge influx of new citizens and STUDENTS it makes it tougher on schools to maintain smaller class sizes and blogs that accommodate rising student numbers . Keep in mind with all the new homes popping up there is NO school operations tax on these for schools , only bond debt is paid on primary residence so that does make schools nervous . Trust NOBODY wants tax increases but it is truly only way to build new schools or expand current ones.

Everyone wants smaller class sizes and more security in schools but as I always say is the general public willing to pay for this , not sure about other Gov organizations but schools are 85% or more labor and majority of it is mandated by Fed and State Laws

Local government I am sure has same issues, like here in Anderson we are currently getting a new jail. Now I am like everyone else that grumbles about spending that amount of money for those that do not follow laws of society but Fed law dictated Anderson Cnty HAD to do this . I understand but not all that happy about it

Honestly when you look at it over all still pretty cheap tax wise to live here, do not complain too much when all those damn Ohio folks come down to the coast and drop wads of money, end of day they are paying taxes for us LOL

Biggest concern I have is the SC State Pension fund, it is in excess of $20 Billion in the hole. This is something I wish we would fix , even though I am not a state employee I do realize this a state obligation

Easy to complain but then again I know for a fact my 2 businesses are not near as efficient as they should be we all make a decent living and enjoy life and my very small group of employees are HAPPY. . End of day that is what matters to me

I am sure it is much tougher through eyes of someone like DT, they see a much bigger picture than I do
