Georgetown won't ever be a serious port. Charleston can handle all of the leftovers from Savannah. Thanks Nikki!!!!

I can remember when Edgefield had a meat packing plant and half a dozen sawmills and planer mills. You could get your own pigs and cows processed and have your own lumber milled. It seems like that would be feasible to come around again.

Nobody gonna have a backyard fluff mill to make diapers, tampons, and other absorbents.

That is a sight to see. When I lived there it was wild, and I drove through the other day and it was even larger...Nestled between 2 paper mills...

How in the fuck do we let the penal colony get ahead of us? All of our leaders should be wards of the penal system.

We do nothing to keep our long term industry but we spread our legs for anyone wanting to move here. It makes no sense. I am not saying the state could force IP to stay but they definitely should be vocal and trying to keep them.

You make a good point...I've witnessed a few loggers get damn creative with the recent sawmill closures in SE GA cut some export logs.

The ongoing dredging needed would be cost prohibitive for it to ever be feasible, not to mention the pilotage/ tug fees getting all the way up to town. Never going to happen.

We are going to focus on exporting timber to other countries while we are getting beat buy other countries exporting their processed timber products to the US? I could be off on what is going on here, but this doesn't quite add up.

The question is... Are the mills closing due to reduction in demand or overseas competition (due to excessive regulations, unfair trade relationships, etc)? Would seriously like to hear some real facts on this because I am not educated enough on this specific topic to understand which is taking place (or could be both).
