Portion of SC/GA Closes for deer season
CLARKS HILL, S.C. —
Major damage caused by Helene has forced officials to cancel deer hunts for the rest of the year in an area of South Carolina and Georgia.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Savannah District, J. Strom Thurmond, Forest, Fish, and Wildlife Section announced Tuesday it was cancelling the Bussey Point Corps Management Unit 2024 deer hunts due to the extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene.
Bussey Point wilderness recreation area is a 2,545-acre peninsula on man-made J. Strom Thurmond Lake, which borders both South Carolina and Georgia on the Savannah, Broad, and Little Rivers northwest of Augusta, Georgia.
"Hurricane Helene caused impassable roads due to fallen trees which makes Bussey Point CMU unsafe for hunting this year," officials said in a release. "Staff, contractors, and timber operations are working to clear roads, salvage timber, and ensure public safety, but hazardous conditions remain, which could delay first responders reaching hunters if emergency services are needed."
Evan Brashier, USACE conservation biologist at J. Strom Thurmond, released this statement about the decision:
“We appreciate the public’s patience during this recovery period and ask that you refrain from using our other recreational activities such as biking, hiking, horseback riding, and primitive camping, too. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation."

Unless your bird watching or making tiktok videos, then just please refrain.

Bussey point has nothing to do with hunting in SC. It is located on the GA side of the lake
