Though my parents went through Hugo in Summerville, I thankfully was not even a single celled organism yet.

We road it out in Ladson. My grandmother cooked all of our dinners in the fireplace. Fond memories, actually.

Pretty stanky, i remember trying to keep up with a black lab that we'd just picked up from Bruce.. the aftermath, and my father and I running around during the eye.

I moved to Columbia two days after Hugo. I grew up in WV and had only been to Columbia once to interview for a job and to lease an apartment. Driving to my new apartment was fun as all the signs on the interstate were blown over. Like to never found columbia much less my apartment.

Years ago I flew up to Baltimore, sat beside a tug Skipper. Old as the hills.
He was onboard that night, heard over the radio a ship moored not far from the SY was busting lines, knew which dock it was moored at.
Zero viz but he got under way & piloted over just using his sounder.
Got alongside in time, spooled up both engines for the duration & kept the ship from drifting away.
Once visibility opened up he said it was a mess.

My dad was at the VA hospital working through the storm. My parents lived off Ashley phosphate. My mother rode out the storm at home while he was at the hospital. He used to tell me luckily it hit at low tide. He went out in the eye and the water was inches from coming in the hospital
