Good luck with your search CurLee. My father is 74 this year as well.

I hope to put him on a couple good trips for him to remember as well, just as you are.

I just wanted to come back this post and thank EVERYbody who responded to this thread and the multiple members who offered both their time and access to their property to help get my Dad on a turkey last spring.

    Welltaut and Bigtime, especially.....Thank you.

Dad and I ended up hunting a couple mornings and one evening on property that one of yall graciously opened up to us. Meanwhile he had heard ONE lone gobble and never saw a turkey on my own property, as I had kind of expected.

The last afternoon that he was able to hunt, we came back to my fellow SCducker's property and were able to talk to at least three gobblers but saw only one. He didn't get an opportunity to shoot but was ecstatic to talk to and see gobblers in a state he had never hunted before. It was a good day.

It was also the last day I was able to hunt with my Dad. We lost him on July 25th....

Still hurts, and deer season in WV in November is gonna suck. But I'll be there, because I can't NOT be there.

He was a good man, and I'm glad he was able to see firsthand how kind and generous the folks on this website are.
Kevin, he was extremely grateful for the experience, and I'm sorry that he couldn't shake your hand and thank you personally due to circumstances. It meant a lot to the both of us.

Sorry for your loss. Glad you and your Dad got to spend some time in the woods together. As we all know, it's not about the kill.

Sorry to hear it! You will never forget that time in the woods together. Now be sure to honor his memory by passing it on if you just take a kid bream fishing…

My youngest daughter will be in the stand with me come October, and possibly behind the gun for the first time, too. Dad was a first generation hunter. My nephew and daughter are now third generation hunters.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys.

You'll certainly hook up locally on here...good folks. I'm dedicating 2025 to working as much as I possibly can, but 2026 will find me with most of the spring free. Touch base with me in early 2026, and if y'all want to come chase a Merriams, I should be able to get him on one pretty easily. Best thing is...you can come out here in late May, well after your SE season is done, and kill a beautiful bird that generally will act like a turkey is supposed to act. I have some private access, but honestly my public spots are better and more fun and beautiful to hunt.

WWD, thank you. It's funny I just got done giving 2thdoc a hard time in another thread (jokingly, of course,) to find your post. He also extended an invitation to hunt his property along with several others here. 2th, and BigTime, and welltaut, and yourself and several others that have responded here are stand up folks. My Dad has since passed. I appreciate every response in this thread...

I planted oats in mid September and they're doing well, all things considered. I found sign that the turkeys have returned to my home property, and Im doing what I can to restore some nesting habitat and simple cover for deer, too. I'm not a turkey hunter by any means, but maybe if they're still around next spring I'll do my damnedest to at least talk to one...

Sorry for your loss man. Dammit. I hope you are flush with turkeys in the upcoming years and can get out plenty and enjoy their magic this spring.
