    Default Reloading - wad question

Trying to load bismuth. My recipe calls for a RP12 wad which apparently is very difficult to find these days. Are there any substitutes? TIA

I don't think there's a direct replacement for the RP12. Ballistic Products Inc usually carries them but it appears they are out of stock. Might still be worth a call to BPI to pick their brains...

Yeah good luck finding the SP12's or just about any Remington wad it seems. I'm starting to get the impression that Remington got out of that market but highly likely I'm wrong. I think it would simply be easier and quicker to go with another recipe.

First of all, what hull and length are you using? That would help me in finding you some alternatives from my various manuals, and possibly even Ballisticsproducts' website. They have an archive of past "Loads of the Week." You can usually search in there and find one that'll for ya.

If not, I have some recipes for ITX for both the 10g/cc version and the hi-density 13g/cc version. I'm not a bog advocate of messing with varying up from established recipes, but since bismuth is just a smidge under the 10g/cc ITX you should be able to use one with the bismuth pellets you have and be fine.

Let me know and I'll share whatever data I have that will help you out.

I may have some left in my supplies downstairs. How many are you looking for?

Thanks guys. I’ve been trading emails with BPI seeing what we can come up with.

Willy it’s a 2 3/4 Fiocchi hull. If BPI can’t come up with anything I may take you up on your ITX recipes.

Woodie if you do have some I’d be interested in a few.

You think you could use one of the old red Win WA12R? They are pretty dang close to my old eyes.

The WAA12R is equivalent to the CB1138-12 (1-1/8 oz - 1-7/8 oz load), or vice versa.

I've got a lot more wads downstairs than I remembered, but no RP12's or WAA12's. I apparently made the change to the Claybuster wads to replace the RP12's when they were discontinued some 10 years or so ago. Here's the link to Midway and they apparently have the Claybusters in stock. Depending on what weight load you're looking for you're looking for the CB1118-12, the CB1114-12, or the CB1138-12.

I do have a few RXP12's and WAA12F14 and 12SL's, along with a mix of 20 gauge wads, so it looks like I need to get some reloading done if my powder is still good.

The Hodgdon website used to have bismuth recipes for 12 gauge using lead wads. Might wanna try there.

Here's a couple from past Load of the Week from BP's site. I even have a pound of Winchester Super Handicap I'll sell ya. It's just collecting dust as I have ample supply of a few others I'm still defaulting to.

The ITX recipes I have will open up some options on powder options. I know that can be a limiting factor as some powders are still kinda hard to come by these days.
