Default Rebarreling options - 300 Remington Ultra Magnum

I recently came to possess a stainless Remington 700 barreled action chambered in 300 Rem Ultra Mag. Receiver and barrel ... no bolt.

I need another project like I need a hole in the head but it's been a minute since I had a Remington 700 to play with. And I definitely don't need a gun in this caliber. So... I'm looking to rebarrel it and build something lighter recoiling but worthy of the long action, good enough for elk (just in case I finally cash in my Wyoming points), and light enough to be easy for a 60 plus year old with fading knees to tote. Availability of brass and ammo is key.

My first thought was 6.5mm PRC, but I might want a LITTLE more ass than that. Or not.

    Thoughts and random rude comments?

A properly set up .300WinMag isn’t hard to shoot at all. I’ve got ‘06’s that have more felt recoil than my .300’s do.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

7 prc or sell the old crappy action to me if you don’t want a project.

7mm PRC looks interesting. Given that I have to buy a bolt and am not tied to a specific bolt face, I actually considered 280 Ackley again. Miss my old one.

Why 300 PRC for those suggesting given the barely noticeable differences out to 1000 vs 7 PRC? I mean if we’re just talking deer you do t need either one, 7mm 08, 280, 6.5 Creedmore all work. I’m assuming elk and larger game in the comparison discussion. I guess if you’re including grizzlies, 300 PRC or larger?

I’m about to invest in a .280 Remington (not AI). I have a thing for dying cartridges. But the .280 AI has become quite popular lately.

Yeah that 50 fps loss going from the ultra to the prc will make up for “definitely don’t need this caliber” and be lighter recoiling…

For me it’s factory ammo since I don’t reload. I can get 300prc easier where I live. Only seen a few boxes of 7prc

Midway has more RUM than either prc. And more 300 prc than 7

My advice is none of the above. The RUM has a small but loyal following. Sell it and buy a better action. I’ve got several rifles built on 700 actions BUT I had complete actions from back when Remington still made a decent action. Buying a barrel , bolt, and then finding a competent smith to do it will cost you more time and money than it’s worth. You can buy a Defiance, Lone Peak or Impact for what you’ll have in that 700 action and tolerances are tight enough you can buy a prefit barrel and put it on yourself if you decide you want to try. something new. I’m a 700 fan, but their day has long since passed.
