    Default @#$%&*! Smilax Thread

We have always called it smilax. I think that is what it is known as, but I never remember it being in my yard as I was growing up, only in the woods. They are so aggressive and numerous in my yard that the tubers are now as big as baked potatoes. Left alone, these things grow ten feet tall in a matter of five or six days. Question: Is there anything other than mechanically removing them with their tubers that can be done? These are some bad dudes with thorns about every inch when they are small. Thanks, MG

Is the lawnmower not running? 2 ft a day?

What kind of grass? I would think that there is very limited labeled products for that particular weed in any type lawn.

Should have been more specific, these are in my flower beds. Have no idea how they have propagated and ended up all over my yard. I have noticed them all around recently, maybe I am just paying more attention. MG

The new tips of the vines are edible. Google "chainey briar". It tastes sort of like asparagus.

Introduced by songbirds according to Clemson link.
Listen to your elders. Not because they are always right but because they have more experiences of being wrong.

Better dig them now if the tubers are potato sized. I've seen them as big as a manhole cover
