Sumter (WLTX) -- According to a recent study by an independent research company, Sumter is among the top five of the country's metropolitan areas that have one of the highest crime rates.
CQ Press says the metropolitan area of Sumter ranks 5th in the country when it comes to crime in 2007.
The rankings are based on six different crime categories that include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle thefts.
Last year, when the rankings included larcenies, Sumter was ranked 13th in the nation.
