For years, I have planted everything you can think of except for sesame. Sunflowers the deer ate, millet doesn't seem to hold the allure it used to. Even corn was a no go.
So this year I decide to change things up a bit. I planted buckwheat and milo. Years ago I planted buckwheat one time and the doves came like mosquitos so I decided to try it again.
I like planting buckwheat for several reasons. It it is a great soil conditioner, the deer can't hurt it, it's very simple, doesn't get real weedy and inexpensive to plant. $50 for a bag which will plant one acre and I didn't even fertilize it this year. If grass gets to be a problem Poast will take care of it. All you have to is get the field ready, disc it in and forget about it mostly. I planted my field a little too late as it is still in the bloom stage but starting to produce a few seed.
Here ya go, I don't know why the larger pictures are still showing up as I deleted them. Oh well,,,,
