    Default Throw and Grow

The property I have access to hunt is all pine, about half mature and the other half replanted 10 years ago. I have a few stands with shooting lanes and was considering spreading some throw and grow. Anyone have any luck getting it to come up, or is it a waste of money?

It'll come up but it most of it is rye grass.

Rye grain (not grass) will grow just about anywhere if it gets some rain. If you can spray and kill what's in the lanes, spread the rye heavy (100lb/acre), and get some rain you will be surprised what it does.

Wheat is another option, but it doesn't grow as well just broadcast.

I have a friend that used to hunt spots like that with amazing success. He would spray it, rake it with a garden rake and spread bags of bird seed and black eyed peas from the grocery store and end up with good looking food plots. I didn’t believe him until I saw it.

^it is certainly possible to rake/disturb the dirt in a way to plant a decent small food plot any where you want it. a little dirt mixed with seed and some sunlight and moisture and, voila, stuff grows.

I'd go with Crimson Clover. I planted some on a farm/timber property's small opening on a path to the creek once and it did really well as a no-till. I threw the seed, then mowed the grass just after. It came up, the deer liked it.

Buy a feeder and throw corn. It’s mainly garbage seed. I do think clover will grow in there but doubt it will help much this season.

planting rye is fine, if you throw corn pile over it. The fresh greens are soothing to the soul in the winter, and it really makes the deer stand out.

The bright green grass messes with my night vision gear and gives me headaches. I prefer pine needles and dead leaves as a background.

Put a corn pile out, and hang a european American colored sheet behind it as a back drop.
