I had one goal in mind this turkey season, and it was to get Gavin his first Longbeard. Anyone that knows me knows the love and passion I have for the Spring woods and hunting the Wild Turkey and have waited 5 years to share this with Gavin. During the off season we got him a mossburg mini 410 set a Burris on top and slinging hand loaded TSS that I loaded and he was ready to go. Several days of practicing and shooting and I was convinced he was ready. Well the first youth hunt gets here and when 3 big Longbeards run into the set up I can see and hear his excitement and the shot was just alil off and the bird ran away. The emotions and disappointment of having the bird run away was weighing on him hard. So we kept hunting some with not much luck and very little gobbling. Then we got permission to hunt some property that was holding a few Longbeards and the game was back on. This evening 3 generations of Bryan's set up in the back of a field surrounded by a SC pine hill that dropped into a bottom. Birds have been feeding in this field and this evening a slight rain was falling. After two series of calls we waited. Then out of no where the Longbeard appeared into the field and slowly started making his way to the gun barrel. At this point Gavin and I were breathing hard and shaking in excitement. Trying the calm Gavin down and get settled on the gun the Longbeard was there at 15 yards when Gavin said daddy you ready and I said kill'em when you can buddy. At 614 pm April 22 2018 5 yo Gavin Bryan joined the Tenth Legion a day I won't ever forget. The excitement in his voice walking up to his first Longbeard was just awesome and I know it's in his blood and he's hooked for life.
