Going out in the boat is a much better idea than studying for exams. I went to crab bank and then behind drum island and found these guys.
This guy fits the whole, "I was on the Discovery channel fad."

That's a Red Brested Merganser, not a Common.
Where is he? I need one for my collection![]()

Damnit, now I'm going to have to change it. I knew he looked a little different. I found them on the northeast tip of Drum Island. I attempted the take off shots, but Av mode killed me with the 1/500 shutter speed.
Richard
How did 1/500 kill you? That's pretty fast but it could be better.............

The outside half of the wings are blurry. It's a pretty good shot other than the wings being blurry. Wish I had underexposed a little bit, but it's ok.
Thanks for the tip to go to Av. It definitely helped today.
Richard
Love the group Peli shot...great composition on that one.
Sweet pic's.........

From what I can tell I would say that this is blurry from movement and it's actually a little out of focus. This is also cropped.

Quite frankly R17 that's not a bad shot at all! The "blur" is from you speed. That you can control in AV by increasing or decreasing your Aperture. I'll see if I can look at your EXIF info later to get a better understanding of what was going on. Truthfully though I like the shot the way it is but I take it you want to "FREEZE" the motion.

I just haven't found my niche for blurred shots yet.

You shot the picture late in the afternoon, like around 4pm correct?
I assume from what I can see in the picture that the sun was out and it was bright out, am I correct?
If so on both of the above questions I would have had the ISO setting on 100 and had the f-stop at 6.3 to start. That should have gotten you a faster shutter speed. However I don't have any experience with the lens you're using.
The Blur you got isn't really what you would consider Blur (aka Boketh). What you have is movement and in this shot you didn't "Freeze" the movement of the wings. A lot of photographers will have their settings purposely set to capture the movement, as you did in this shot. You didn't do anything wrong you just didn't have the right settings to accomplish what you would have liked to accomplish with the shot.

We're trying to have a photography 101 lesson here. Squatty has assigned my next shot to be that of the significant other of 2thDoc with some guy named Pedro. You should come out and watch.
You are right, squatty. The actual time was 4:18 and the sun was bright. Next time, I'll try to take some shots that have movement in them and some where I freeze the movement. Thanks for the help.
Richard
now let's not go getting crazy R17! Stick with the bird subjects, 2th's just been sucking to much NO2 and doesn't get our photo banter.![]()
