    Default flooding my timber...

A few questions regarding this. The area around the hardwoods is lower than sorruonding(sp) areas and i think it could be flooded fairly easily.

    1. Do you all think it should be flooded?

    2. There are ducks in the area(woodies mostly, but teal and mallards too), do you think it would attract ducks moreso than the cypress?

    3. The oaks are thick, reall thick, should i thin it out a little?

    4. Is there another way other than the obvious blocking of the creek to flood the timber?

Thanks, and any other suggestions other than the ?'s are appriceated. Im kinda new to this thing, but i found this opprotunity and wanted you all's opinions.

If you are planning to hunt , you would need to cut a couple holes into the area, for your shooting spots.

I don't think there's any way to flood your oaks without impounding (blocking) the creek. That means fill will have to be placed in wetland areas and this will require engineers, surveys and permits. If your creek is subject to tidal influence, or even near a waterway that is influenced by the tides, you're probably out of luck.

In a simpler time and regulatory climate you could just call a man with a dozer and a dragline and build your dream. In today's regulated world, it will probably be much simpler to clear and dike a field on the high land (pines) adjacent to the oak bottoms. Plant corn in the field and flood it from the creek or a well.

Good luck. Check the regulations and try to stay out of trouble with "the man!" A partial list of "the man" includes, but is not limited to:

SC DHEC (at least five or six sections will have an interest in reviewing your project)
    OCRM
    US Army Corps of Engineers
    US FWS
    SC DNR
    SHPO

Do your fields have ditches? If they do, it probably was once wetlands. Plug them and/or dike the field and put in a well or pump water from the creek

If you really want to know all that is needed from a regulatory standpoint then simply dike it and flood it. Shortly someone will come along and tell you all the forms/permissions you SHOULD have gotten....

Do you have an area nearby that has a lot of ducks? A major refuge, or a big lake, someplace that you can go to everyday and look at birds during the winter. A lot of folks have built impoundments and ended up spending a lot of money for very few birds. I had thought about buildling one too, but after cyphering the costs, and the fact that I would probably end up shooting a few woodies and an occasional mallard it just wasn't worth the effort.

Beaver = wood cutting, dam building mo fo
