Thanks to all of you guys who joined up..
We are now up to slightly over 600 members in just a matter of days.
Just to update those of you not on facebook we have started the process of attaining a meeting with Rick Lint, the head Forest Supervisor, for both the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forest. Our main topic, if the meeting is granted, will be the aerial ignition of large tracts of National Forest lands and the method/times in which they are applied. It is common practice for them to burn 1500 acres to 3000 acres in time frames as short as 4 hours via encircling the entire block at once.
Recently two fires were set via aerial ignition totalling around 3000 acres. These burns occurred before the rain last week, fuel moisture contents were extremely low and the wind forecast and on ground observations throughout the day included sustained winds of 15 with gust from the up to 25mph. The post op burn observations were certainly not good as tree mortality including mature hardwoods were noted as well as complete fermentation soil layer loss in several compartments. Also the burns were adjacent to compartments burned only a month ago. The problem with this application is that any Turkeys that lost their nest or had been displaced by the last fire and had moved to the adjacent compartment to attempt to renest have now been over again with the new burn in the compartments to which they would have moved.
Rick Lint will hopefully allow us to address these burn conditions and methods as from what I can gather from his past he leans towards common sense wildlife and timber management methods.
Again thank you for all your support and please share with your friends and join yourself if you haven't already done so as your voice will definitely count.
And just so everyone knows our efforts will be steadfast as to our Waterfowl WMA areas as well.
